I went to the UGA baseball game at SunTrust Park today. I was coming from the North down I-75, as I live in Canton. We got off the Windy Hill exit and parked in the Red Deck (Approx 35 min drive from my house). Traffic was not a problem, a little slow/sluggish on Circle75 Parkway, right around the stadium but as to be expected on game day. It was far from a sell out. UGA lost 6-1 and the crowd seemed to leave around 7th inning. We stayed through the entire game and walked around the stadium afterwards. So the crowd was considerably thin on our way home. Traffic was slower getting back to 75 from the parking deck. (Approx 45 min to get back home)
The tickets were general admission so you could sit anywhere in the stadium except in the SunTrust Seats behind home plate. We had a fairly big party (needed enough seats we could all sit together) and my wife wanted to sit in the shade. We ended up sitting on the field level out in left field in section 142... it was less than ideal. There is only 1 score board in in left center and 1 out of town score board further in left field. We could not see either score board from our vantage point with the terrace level seats (above) blocking our view. There were no place to see the score, outs, balls/strikes, or batter/pitcher any where else in the stadium. They did have a nice TV mounted above our seats so you could watch live action and replays but no score or game information. They have a small screen in right field that displayed the teams logos and the time a descent sized screen above the bullpen in center field that just said Georgia Bulldogs for most of the game. There is a ribbon like screen that comes down from the terrace level that encircles the stadium that just showed Georgia Bulldogs graphics. Perhaps they will utilize those screens better to display game information during Braves games. That lack of information really took away from the game experience. I guess a solution would be to use your I phone for a app like gameday (I couldn't since it wasn't a MLB game). I just wonder how bad the lag would be from real time. I was able to connect to the Xfinity wifi to surf the net, and it was impressively fast. I would suggest staying on the 1st base side and you should have a descent view of the scoreboards.
I gotta say I loved the view of the field. I went around the stadium from the top to the bottom. I couldn't find a bad seat to see action on the field. Your are really right on top of the field. Even up on the Xfinity roof top you are high but right on top of the field (nice view). There are plenty of options for concessions and are right on the concourse immediately behind the seats. So you can get up get a bite and a beer without missing any action. I tried the nachos from a small nacho stand. They had chopped chicken or pork, white cheese, verde sauce, pico de gallo, salsa, jalapeno peppers, and sour cream on them. They were AWESOME, expensive as hell ($10.50) but good. Traversing the concourse was challenging at times. This was a small crowd and it was very congested and tight moving along the concourse. (I kept getting separated, due to the crowd, from my daughter and wife as we were walking along the concourse.)
I loved the stadium itself. They did a nice job with the features such as the Chop House seats, and Below the Chop (on the playing field). They look like a cool place to watch the game. The Sandlot offers a lot to entertain the little ones with a zip line, and a running track to race your favorite player. Xfinity Rooftop offers an indoor lounge/bar and nice outdoor area with shaded couches, ping pong tables, foosball tables, corn hole and a Big screen TV to watch the game (beats me why you would go to the ballpark and watch TV but it is a nice area). Monument Grove is awesome, the braves did a nice job celebrating their past players. I gotta say Hammering Hank's new statue looks MUCH better in person than in the pics I had seen online (THANK GOD).
I Battery had a few restaurants open right in front of the stadium. I can't remember the name of any of them other than the Terrapin Brewery. Everthing seems small...There is still a lot in construction. The Battery and SunTrust Park feel cramped to me... The same feeling I get walking around The Avalon (mixed use development in Alpharetta).
Overall I am pleased the with the experience and look forward to seeing the Braves get on their new field and see how the stadium plays.
