I'm hoping that you hear me out with an open mind and tell me if it's feasible.
We are obsessed with speed, I admit it. It's sexy, it's fun, it's a rush But it's killing the pitchers, actually the hitters. The hitters are the one in danger of being killed every time they face one of these hard throwers. I call them hard throwers because that's what they are nowadays for the most part. They don't pitch, they throw, and this is very unfortunate because these "throwers" are dropping like flies, and once in a while, just like the case of Chris Ianetta the other night, he got a pretty good scare as a batter. I hope he turns out alright but that was ugly.
The problem is because of this obsession of having to throw as hard as possible, although very entertaining, is not helping the game at all in the long run. This is why I'm here as possibly the first to recommend that we set a speed limit on pitches.
Here's what I recommend:
Starting pitchers and relief pitchers up to the end of 7th inning , 96 mph speed limit
Relievers and closers from 8th inning to end of game, 100 mph.
Anything over the speed limit will be called a ball.
This addresses a few things:
1) Makes pitchers learn how to pitch, not just throw as hard as possible. I remember how great it was to watch Greg Maddux pitch. I wish there was more of that.
2) This max effort that pitchers are using will only shorten their career. Too many damn Tommy John surgeries.
3) It’s safer for the hitters. I have never recalled seeing so many hitters with these special helmets with that extra piece to cover more of their face.
This obsession with the triple digit fastball has got to end. I know it’s sexy and fun but at the expense of a player possibly getting killed or a pitcher literally throwing away his career just because he has to throw as hard as possible?
The pitchers need to learn how to pitch, for everyone's sake. For baseball player's sake.
