Dear Mr. Snell; I understand your situation. I really do. Your union has already agreed to have their salaries pro-rated based on how many games are played this year (if any). Since it appears that the plan is to play pretty close to half a season, your 7 million dollar salary would be reduced to only 3.5 million. Ouch...that's a big pay cut. Now you are concerned that if revenue sharing comes into play you will lose an additional 1/3, reducing your salary to 'only' $2,345,000. I hope you can get by on that for a while. And I know you are worried about your safety as you play baseball for three whole months out of the year. Who wouldn't be worried? But there are a few things I would ask you to consider:
Blake, I don't know what the average grocery store worker makes, but I'll guess it's less than $15 an hour. I'll use that figure anyway, since the whole idea is just to put things in perspective. And here's the perspective...that grocery store worker would have to work 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, for 75 years and 2 months to make $2,345,000. Or, to make it simpler, your 'unacceptable' salary would be over 75 times what the grocery store guy (or gal) makes. And they don't get to earn it by working just 3 months of the year. Playing a game.
I could complicate things by comparing your awful salary to nurses, police officers, fire fighters, teachers, and others whose job actually means something. But I won't do that because if you haven't gotten the point by now you never will.
I won't even insult you by assuming that you think you would be in more danger of contracting the Covid-19 virus than any of the folks I mentioned above, who are working for something near 1 or 2% of what you would make.
You need to realize how damn lucky you are Blake. In fact, even though I hate to say it because I am a big baseball fan, I wouldn't mind seeing the whole season cancelled so you don't make a dime. Then you might get to see what the real world is like. Maybe you would even have to do something unique. Like getting a job.
Sincerely,
An Atlanta Braves Fan
