Compromise for Universal DH

If we're going to have a universal DH in MLB, I certainly hope it is not with the same rules as have been used in AL. I oppose the DH as many other National League fans do. It really takes away a lot of strategy from the game. I have a compromise to change the DH so NL fans could accept it and AL fans would be OK with it.

THE DH COMPROMISE

A DH is allowed, but cannot be used for the pitcher. The strategy is added back into the game with the pitcher batting.

The DH can be used for any other position. This will create a DF (Designated Fielder) for the position player that is DHed for. This could lead to seeing some amazing defensive plays by DF.

The only complaint I can see coming from American League fans is they do not want to see a weak at bat by pitcher. But the added strategy and improved defensive position could greatly add to the excitement of the game.

Here is why I think the compromise is better:

  • Keeps the strategy to pinch-hit or not for the pitcher in the game.

  • Adds new defensive fielder position that can be exciting to watch.

  • Adds batter that should be much better than worst non-pitcher batter.

  • Adds offense (DH) and defense (DF) while keeping pinch-hit strategy in the game.
