Foltynewicz will try to regain his form in the minor leagues.

As expected, Mike Foltynewicz is headed back to Gwinnett. The Atlanta Braves made it official on Sunday morning announcing that they had optioned Foltynewicz to Triple-A and recalled Chad Sobotka to take his spot on the active roster.

Foltynewicz hit rock bottom on Saturday when he allowed eight hits and eight runs over four innings in a come-from-behind win against the Nationals. His ERA has ballooned to 6.37 and barely resembles the pitcher we saw last year when he emerged as the staff ace and All-Star for a playoff team.

Folty’s struggles began in spring training where an elbow issue limited him to just one spring appearance. He experienced diminished velocity early on in his return but as the velocity has returned, he has continued to be largely ineffective. He will now get a chance to go down to the minors in an effort to gain a reset.

Sobotka began the season in Atlanta’s bullpen but struggled and was eventually placed on the injured list in late April due to an abdominal strain. Since then he has made six appearances at Gwinnett where he has allowed five runs in 7 2/3 innings.

No word yet on who will replace Foltynewicz in the rotation for his next scheduled start Thursday in Chicago. Candidates appear to be Bryse Wilson who will be on regular rest or Sean Newcomb who is on a rehab assignment with the Stripers.
