Marcell Ozuna bet on himself last offseason and the move could pay off for him on the free agent market this offseason. While there is a level of uncertainty for this offseason’s free agent class, Ozuna is coming off of a career year and will not have draft pick compensation attached to him as he enters the market. He will be looking for a multiyear deal from someone and his market will expand should the DH stick in the National League.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand took a look at eight potential suitors for Ozuna with the Braves topping the list given his impact and how seamlessly he fit into their clubhouse and team culture.
Atlanta has had great success with one-year deals of late, getting the most out of Josh Donaldson in 2019 and Ozuna in ’20. It’s possible that general manager Alex Anthopoulos will look to the market for the next short-term slugger he can find, but Ozuna seemed to be a perfect fit in the Braves’ clubhouse, so signing him to a multiyear deal should be under consideration.
It is also worth pointing out that Alex Anthopoulos has been hesitant to hand out long term deals since taking over as Atlanta’s GM although he did do so with reliever Will Smith last offseason.
Other potential suitors according to Feinsand include the White Sox, Red Sox and possibly a reunion with the Cardinals.
