The 2020 Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners were announced Tuesday night live on ESPN. The Atlanta Braves entered the night with three finalists including centerfielder Ronald Acuña Jr., shortstop Dansby Swanson and pitcher Max Fried who took home the award for National League pitchers. Fried finished the season with five defensive runs saved and was tied for the major league lead in pickoffs. Fried is the first Braves pitcher to win a Gold Glove since Greg Maddux in 2003.
“I am incredibly honored to win the Gold Glove award,” Fried said. “We take great pride in our defense and I could not have won this award without my teammates in the field behind me.”
This year’s awards are based on SABR’s Defensive Index which combined a series of metrics. No player or manager votes were included in the process this year.
