Scherzer says he won’t start this weekend
It appears that the Braves won’t have to contend with National’s ace Max Scherzer this weekend. Scherzer received a cortisone shot on Tuesday to help clear up some inflammation in his lower back. It will take four or five days for the inflammation to clear before he will be allowed to throw a bullpen session. Scherzer last pitched on July 6.
Angels designate Matt Harvey for assignment
Matt Harvey’s stint with the Angels appears to be over. Los Angeles designated Harvey for assignment on Friday after he has posted a 7.09 ERA in 12 starts this season. He signed a one-year, $11 million contract this past offseason.
MLBPA reportedly drops lawyer ahead of CBA talks
ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that the Major League Baseball Players Association has let go of longtime attorney Rick Shapiro who had been heavily involved in past CBA negotiations and arbitration arguments.
The Phillies have an agreement with free agent lefty Drew Smyly and he could join their rotation as soon as this weekend. Smyly opted out of his minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers earlier this week. To make room in the rotation, Philadelphia will be moving Nick Pivetta to the bullpen.
Boone suspended one game after confrontation
Yankees manager Aaron Boone was given a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for his outburst with home plate umpire Brennan Miller in Thursday’s game against the Rays. Boone took exception to Miller’s strike zone as did several Yankees hitters.
