Not a week has gone by without at least one person us (and every Braves beat writer for that matter) what is going on with Luiz Gohara. Gohara, who was among the Braves’ more promising pitching prospects coming into the 2018 season, has barely pitched in the last two seasons after dealing with injuries and personal issues through the first half of the 2018 season and shoulder issues knocked him out for the second half of last year.
There was cause for optimism before the 2019 season, though. It was widely reported that Gohara had lost a good bit of weight and had committed to a lot of healthy work habits. Unfortunately, that is where the good news (and really any news) ended as Gohara got shut down due to ongoing shoulder issues and there was nary an update on his status as the season rolled on.
Until now (hat tip to Baseball America for being the first I’ve seen to leak this little tidbit in their recent top 30 update).
#Braves pitching prospect Luiz Gohara will miss the entire season after having shoulder surgery. The arthroscopic procedure was characterized as a clean-out/exploratory operation, to alleviate soreness he's had since spring training. No significant tissue damage was discovered.

No sane person thought that Gohara was going to pitch this season given the lack of information about his progress and the fact that he has barely pitched at all in two years. However, it is nice to see some clarity as to his situation and the update that no significant tissue damage was found can be a source of optimism. One does have to wonder just how “insignificant” his injury is when surgery was required and it knocked him out for so long, but for the moment we will focus on the positives.
While Gohara has been on the mound, he has had periods of being productive. His career 5.33 ERA in the majors is a bit unslightly, but he has also struck out 49 batters in 49 IP and many of his peripherals were very promising.
