BRAVES NEWS

Braves bury Brewers 4-2 behind Fried, Freeman brilliance

Max Fried had an excellent bounceback outing before being lifted due to a blister issue following the fifth inning. He did enough to earn the win, and Freddie Freeman did enough to make it possible, belting a three-run homer for the second consecutive game. The Braves have now won five in a row, and will look to keep it rolling on Tuesday.

Braves place Jacob Webb on IL, recall Huascar Ynoa from Gwinnett

The Braves placed one of the key members of their relief corps on the injured list on Monday, as Jacob Webb will be sidelined with a right elbow impingement. Replacing Webb will be Huascar Ynoa.

Braves Trade Deadline Targets: Madison Bumgarner

Talking Chop will roll out a series of profiles for potential Braves trade targets over the next several days. The first installment features Madison Bumgarner, who has been mocked to the Braves by seemingly every baseball writer in America. Ivan did the write-up for this particular version.

Well, “need” is a strong word. As is going to be the case for all of these trade targets, the Braves don’t “need” anything. They have the majors’ fifth-best record and fourth-best playoff odds, without any of these guys, and with a series of potential contributors (Ender Inciarte, Mike Foltynewicz, Kevin Gausman, etc.) on the shelf or otherwise unavailable due to injury and/or ineffectiveness. The Braves don’t “need” Madison Bumgarner.

Braves Trade Deadline Targets: Zack Wheeler

Another potential trade target was Zack Wheeler of the Mets, but news broke on Monday that the right-hander would head to the injured list with shoulder fatigue. This does not entirely rule out his candidacy as a rotation option for Atlanta and other buyers, but it certainly places a cloud of uncertainty over the situation. Scott did the write-up for TC, and published it about an hour before Wheeler hit the IL.

Since the aforementioned mid-2018 surge, Wheeler has been among the game’s better starting pitchers. He’s made 30 starts since last year’s All Star Game, and the numbers speak for themselves: 194 innings, 3.53 ERA, 3.22 FIP, 3.69 xFIP, 9.42 K/9, 2.27 BB/9. He’s throwing harder than he ever has before, too, with his fastball sitting mid-90s and a slider that routinely sits low-90s.
