Braves rally in the ninth inning, then beat Mets in extra innings

The Braves were down and seemingly out, but they rallied in the ninth inning to tie the game, then stole the victory in extra innings.

Today's game brought with it a foreboding sense of dread as it entered the later stages of the contest. The Braves had a lead late in the game, but they blew it before getting into the ninth inning. Just when we thought we were about to watch a movie with the same ending, the Braves changed the script on us. So, instead of talking about another late loss, it's time to talk about an improbable Braves victory.

For the first six innings of this game, we got what was advertised: A tight and close pitcher's duel between two good, solid young pitchers. Shelby Miller and Jacob deGrom traded plenty of scoreless innings during that window, with the lone score of the day at that point coming from an absolute rocket shot of a home run from Freddie Freeman in the very first inning.

Other than Freeman's home run, the focus for the first six-and-a-half innings of this game was on pitching and defense. Both sides did a good job of flashing the leather, which included a couple of nice defensive plays from Cameron Maybin. Naturally, if we're talking about defense then we have to include a moment where Andrelton Simmons made a spectacular defensive play of his own. It's ho-hum for him at this point, but it's still astonishing for us mortals to witness it whenever he's called upon to pull it off.

Unfortunately, shortly after Simba's wonderful defensive effort, the Mets finally broke through the Braves' walls. That was the first out of the inning, but the Mets next two batters singled and doubled. This brought Travis d'Arnaud to the plate, and he ended up hitting a two-run single. Just like that, the Mets were in the lead, and they extended their lead after Shelby Miller exited the game. This was when Lucas Duda hit a double of his own off of Dana Eveland to bring home d'Arnaud. The Braves threatened in the eighth inning, but were unable to bring home a run. Again, it seemed like the Braves were on their way to yet another heartbreaker of a loss. Plus, this was a pretty bad omen.

However, things changed in the ninth inning. With Jeurys Familia unavailable, the Mets decided to turn to Hansel Robles to close out today's game. Robles got off to a rough start by walking Chris Johnson then giving up a single, but he got things under control by striking out Juan Uribe then picking up an out via fielder's choice. The Braves were down to their last out, but Cameron Maybin looped the ball into left field to bring Atlanta within a run.

After this, the Mets gave Alex Torres the ball in an effort to stop the bleeding. Unfortunately for the Mets, the man who put the Braves on the board way back in the first inning did it again in the ninth inning. With two out and a full count, Freddie Freeman came up huge by rolling one right up the middle for a game-tying single. Just like that, the Braves had beaten the metaphorical ref's ten-count and were up off the mat, swinging again.

After a scoreless tenth inning, the Braves struck again in the eleventh inning. Andrelton Simmons reached with a single (bringing his line on the day to 4-4). Immediately afterwards, Juan Uribe managed to reach base after his grounder deflected off of Dilson Herrera's glove. After a sacrifice from Jace Peterson, Cameron Maybin returned to the plate and picked up where he left off in the ninth inning. Maybin put one into center field for a base hit, and it was good enough for both Simba and Uribe to score, putting the Braves up 5-3.

Williams Perez was called upon to make the save, and although he ran into trouble, the rookie was able to induce a double play to negate the trouble. After that, he was able to get the third and final out of the inning, giving the Braves an improbable yet lovely victory.

After seeing the Braves blow some big chances during Friday night's game, it was good to see most of the crew come up huge during today's contest. Also, isn't it nice to see another team's bullpen botch things in the late stages of the game? It's much better than seeing our guys do it, that's for sure. Either way, this was an exciting game to watch, and it's good to see that our guys came out on top in this one.

Also, enjoy this video. It's in honor of the Braves busting a 5-game losing streak against the Mets and also busting that 30-game win streak that the Mets had when it came to leading after eight innings. Bustin' makes me feel good.
