Braves place Yonder Alonso on the restricted list

Looks like the Braves will not have Yonder Alonso’s services.

Today has been a bit of a whirlwind. The news this morning that the COVID-19 outbreak amongst the Marlins was significantly worse than we thought as many people wondering if the league could feasibly cancel the season today. For the moment, at least, it looks like there will be games tonight sans two that have been postponed due to either involving the Marlins or having to decontaminate because of them.

There are potential impacts for the Braves as well. The Braves played an exhibition game against the Marlins last week and with Tyler Flowers and Travis d’Arnaud testing negative but feeling under the weather, the test results for the next couple of days are going to be VERY important for the Braves’ season and really for the entire league.

For the moment, though...we have roster news.

We don’t yet as to why Yonder Alonso was placed on the restricted list, although we can speculate a bit based on previous moves. When Nick Markakis and Felix Hernandez opted out, they also went on the restricted list, thereby insuring that the Braves weren’t going to have to pay them. For a guy like Alonso who may have been foreseeing a future playing in Gwinnett and not seeing much playing time in the majors combined with the risks associated with playing that are on full display, he could have made that decision as well although again...we don’t know for sure what is going on here and we can likely expect to hear more later today.
