It will be interesting to see what the Atlanta Braves do with their first pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. Most pundits so far seem to think Atlanta will go underslot with the 25th pick in an attempt to load up on high school talent in the latter rounds.
MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis released his latest mock draft earlier this week at MLB.com and projected Miami right-hander Chris McMahon to the Braves at No. 25.
The Braves want a high-ceiling guy here and the best possibility might be one of the top high school right-handers, though fitting Abel, Kelley or Bitsko with three other picks into a $4,127,800 bonus pool looks like a stretch. They probably can’t get Soderstrom to last this long either, which would leave them shopping in the college righty aisle.
Baseball America calls McMahon “the top arm in southern Florida.” He features a plus fastball that is regularly in the mid-90s but plays better due to deception and solid movement. He also features a slider and changeup and has toyed with a cutter. McMahon was off to a great start in 2020 posting a 1.05 ERA in four starts while striking out 38 in 25 2/3 innings.
