The Atlanta Braves come into Tuesday’s game in Minnesota having lost three of their past four games and 11 of 19 overall. Their lead in the NL East is still a healthy six games over Washington and Philadelphia but with a tough schedule ahead, they know they simply must play better. They will look to turn things around Tuesday night when Mike Foltynewicz returns to the rotation as they continue their series against the Twins.
The last time Foltynewicz was in the majors he was nailed for eight hits and eight runs in just four innings against the Nationals back on June 22. He was optioned to Triple-A the next day after posting a 6.37 ERA in 11 starts. A lot of his struggles stemmed from an ineffective slider and a considerable uptick in home runs allowed. After allowing 17 in 183 innings during his All-Season in 2018, Folty has served up 16 in just 59 1/3 innings this season.
His performance at Gwinnett has been encouraging as reports indicate that his slider’s effectiveness has improved. He allowed a total of two earned runs over his last three starts for the Stripers and has not allowed a home run since his demotion. We will have to wait and see if his recent success will translate to the Major League level but getting him somewhat closer to the form he showed last season would be a huge lift for the Braves over the final two months of the season.
Minnesota will counter with right-hander Jose Berrios who has been dealing of late. Berrios allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings in his last start against the Marlins. He has allowed just two earned runs over his last 19 2/3 innings (three starts).
