The Atlanta Braves announced Sunday afternoon that Anthony Swarzak has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to right shoulder inflammation. To fill the roster spot, the Braves called up Chad Sobotka.

Obviously, this certainly is not an ideal turn of events for the Braves. Swarzak arguably has been the most vital part of a resurgent Braves bullpen that has been among the best in baseball since they acquired him on May 20th. Since then, Swarzak has produced a pitching triple slash line of 0.52 ERA/2.55 FIP/ 2.92 xFIP over 17.1 innings.

With Luke Jackson taking over the closer’s role, Swarzak has stepped up as the main source of putting out fires in the Atlanta pen. His latest work was one of the best, striking out Jeff McNeil and getting Pete Alonso to fly out to keep the Braves ahead in Friday night’s game. While others have certainly contributed to the bullpen’s success as a whole, Swarzak has consistently delivered in high leverage situations.

The extent of the injury is not known, and an injury to a reliever’s shoulder is never ideal. However, if rest is the cure, a silver lining could be the timing of the injury. After an off day tomorrow, the Braves play the Phillies and the Marlins before a four-day break due to the All-Star Game. While Swarzak will surely be missed in the series against the Phillies, he hopefully will not miss too much time after the All-Star Break, if at all.

Chad Sobotka will once again return to Atlanta, as he has split time between the Braves and Stripers this season. While his 7.07 ERA has been a cause for concern, his work at Gwinnett has been better. Though he may not replicate the work of Swarzak, the Braves have to hope he can find some of his success from last year, soon. Jacob Webb and Touki Toussaint figure to see more work in crucial situations until Swarzak returns.
