With the 21st pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, the Atlanta Braves have selected shortstop Braden Shewmake out of Texas A&M. The Braves elected to go with Shewmake over some higher upside arms. He profiles as a hitter with good bat speed but will need to add some strength to realize his power potential.

He hit .309/.364/.480 with six home runs in 56 games in 2019. Scouts seem to think there is more power potential there once the body begins to fill out although there is a concern that he could out grow the shortstop position. He is categorized as a plus runner and could potentially shift to the outfield if needed.

Shewmake may end up being a guy that gets thrust into a super utility role but has a strong track record of hitting and is a safe college bat which is a trend through the Braves’ two first round picks.
