Gwinnett Stripers 8, Norfolk Tides 10 - F/13

Box Score

  • Alex Jackson, C: 2-7, 2B, RBI, R, .897 OPS
  • Jack Lopez, 3B: 4-6, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, .799 OPS
  • Andres Santiago, SP: 2 IP, 7 H, 6 R (5 ER), 2 BB, 1 K, 5.63 ERA

Gwinnett went back and forth with Norfolk most of the evening, but ultimately fell in extra innings by the score of 10-8. Starter Andres Santiago got lit up in his two innings of work while allowing six runs although one of those was of the unearned variety. Wes Parsons kept Gwinnett in the game as he came on in relief and threw four scoreless innings of relief. Jason Creasy, Chad Sobotka, and Grant Dayton all had scoreless appearances of their own as well as we headed into extra innings. Unfortunately, that was where the good news ended for the bullpen as Jose Rafael de Paula had a rough night as he let four runners cross the plate which ultimately proved to be too much to overcome.

On offense, don’t look now but Alex Jackson is in the middle of a nice little stretch here of late. He has hit safely in four straight games and and has six RBIs over that same span. The batting average looks a little rough, but he is still impacting the game in a positive way when he is in the lineup. Pedro Florimon, Jack Lopez, and Luis Marte all had multi-hit games for Gwinnett. We also saw a bit of pop from the lineup yet again (even without Austin Riley or Adam Duvall) as Lopez and Sean Kazmar both went deep on Saturday.

Mississippi Braves 7, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 8 - F/10

Box Score

  • Cristian Pache, RF: 2-5, 2B, R, .831 OPS
  • Drew Waters, LF: 2-5, 3B, RBI, 2 R, .801 OPS
  • Ray-Patrick Didder, CF: 2-4, HR, 2B, RBI, R, .555 OPS
  • Ian Anderson, SP: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R (1 ER), 2 BB, 9 K

Another tough extra-innings loss in the Braves’ minor league system as Mississippi allowed Jacksonville to rally and steal an 8-7 win. Ian Anderson was excellent on Saturday which his fastball and changeup looking particularly on point. This start was also a season high in innings pitched for Ian and the third time this season where he has struck out 8+ batters. Unfortunately, Connor Johnston allowed four earned runs in his less than an inning of work with one of those runs being an inherited runner that Jason Hursh allowed to score. Then Jordan Harrison allowed a pair of runs to score and that was all she wrote.

On offense, the dynamic duo at the top of Mississippi’s lineup had decent nights and both Pache and Waters had multi-hit games including an extra-base hit for each of them. Ray-Patrick Didder, who has struggled mightily at the plate this season, had a strong game as well as he had a pair of extra-base hits including a solo homer in the 6th inning.

Florida Fire Frogs 5, Dunedin Blue Jays 7

Box Score

  • Greyson Jenista, RF: 1-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, .669 OPS
  • William Contreras, C: 2-5, RBI, R, .724 OPS
  • Nolan Kingham, SP: 2.1 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 4 BB, 1 K, 5.63 ERA

Florida ALMOST rallied in the last inning, but ultimately fell to Dunedin by the score of 7-5. Nolan Kingham had a rough start as he failed to escape the third inning while giving up seven earned runs. The Florida bullpen did great work though as Lukas Young, Brad Roney (making his second appearance this season), and Daysbel Hernandez all combined for 5.2 innings of scoreless relief.

On offense, it was little contributions from various places in the lineup late in the game that kept Florida in it. William Contreras and Hagen Owenby each had multi-hit games for Florida. Greyson Jenista had a two-run double in the ninth inning, although it looks like he had a TOOTBLAN on the same play as well.

Rome Braves 5, Asheville Tourists 4

Box Score

  • Griffin Benson, 1B: 1-3, BB, RBI, R, .763 OPS
  • Trey Harris, DH: 1-3, 2B, RBI, 2 R, 1.068 OPS
  • Jose Olague, SP: 7 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 3.61 ERA

Rome secured a 5-4 win over Asheville thanks to a walk-off error in the bottom of the ninth. Minor league baseball in funny. Jose Olague did make it through seven innings, but he was his usual self in that he will give up his fair share of hits and not miss many bats. Ultimately, Olague relies on getting weak contact for outs while throwing a bunch of strikes. Sometimes that works and sometimes, well, it won’t. Tanner Lawson came in and threw two innings of scoreless relief.

On offense, I know you will be shocked....but Trey Harris had another hit in this game. After his hitting streak ended in the previous game, Harris simply started another one with a double on Saturday. We are as confused as you are as to why he hasn’t been promoted yet. Ricardo Rodriguez had a hit and drove in a pair of runs, but was replaced by Logan Brown on the same play. It will be worth keeping an eye on that situation to see if Rodriguez may be dinged up and have to miss some time.
