R.A. Dickey turned in a solid performance on the mound but the Atlanta Braves weren’t able to muster any offense in a 3-0 loss.
Dickey came into Saturday’s start struggling having allowed 21 hits and 12 earned runs over his first 15 innings. He got off to a rocky start on Saturday when Rio Ruiz misplayed a grounder that Juan Lagares turned into a triple to lead off the game. Lagares then scored on a passed ball by catcher Kurt Suzuki to give the Mets a quick 1-0 lead.
Dickey struck out Ty Kelly for the first out of the inning but Michael Conforto followed with a long home run to right center to make it 2-0.
Dickey settled down from there and retired 11 of 12 batters following Conforto’s home run. He worked around a single and a walk in the fifth and a pair of singles in the sixth but escaped further damage. He exited after the sixth having allowed seven hits and two runs to go along with a walk and three strike outs.
The Mets added an insurance run off of Braves reliever Kevin Chapman in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by L.J. Mazzilli. Also of note for Atlanta, Chaz Roe worked a scoreless ninth while striking out two. Roe has struggled so far this spring but looked sharp on Saturday.
Brandon Phillips accounted for two of Atlanta’s five hits on the afternoon. The Braves hit into a pair of double plays and were 0-for-2 with men in scoring position.
The Braves will travel to Port St. Lucie on Sunday for a rematch against the Mets with Matt Wisler scheduled to get the start.
