After selecting LHP Kolby Allard with the 14th pick in the 2015 draft, a high upside pitcher out of high school, the Braves continued their stockpiling of prospects. With their 2nd pick in the draft, the Braves went outside of the box a bit and selected RHP Mike Soroka out of Bishop Carroll High School in Alberta, Canada.
Soroka began to move up draft boards as teams began to scout other Canadian prep stars such as fellow first rounder Josh Naylor and they got a better look at him. Standing 6'5 and at 210 pounds, one wonders how much more can be projected out of that frame but there could be room for growth there. His fastball sits in the low to mid 90's, but has a quite a bit of movement. His next best pitch is probably his change-up with his breaking ball definitely a work in progress. He threw lights out this past spring and the Braves seem to think that there is a lot of upside and room for more velocity and improvement in Soroka. He's going to take a while, but he definitely could see time with the big club.
One thing to note is that its very possible that this was an underslot signing, with the Braves picking Soroka with the understanding that he will sign for underslot money so the Braves can spread their pool further in the rest of the draft.
With three more picks in the first 75 picks in the draft, the Braves still have quite a lot of work to do tonight, but they have gone a long way thus far towards shaping the future of the organization.
