The Braves will play a doubleheader against the Nationals on Wednesday, April 7th starting at 12:05 p.m. ET to compensate for the postponement of the game scheduled for Monday, April 5th due to COVID-19 exposure among the Nationals’ team. This will be a 7-inning doubleheader, as per the health and safety protocols for the 2021 season.
To account for today's postponement, the Braves and Nationals will play a straight doubleheader that begins Wednesday at 12:05 p.m. ET at Nats Park— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) April 5, 2021
This is a somewhat surprising decision, given that the Nationals are without a number of players due to either a COVID-19 positive test or the league contact tracing quarantine protocols. Kyle Schwarber, Josh Harrison, Jon Lester, and Alex Avila are confirmed to be among the players that will be missing, but there are other players that will also be unavailable for Washington. It is expected that Drew Smyly will start the game on Tuesday, with Max Fried starting one game on Wednesday and a bullpen game for the other game of the doubleheader. Fried will be on five days rest and this will set up Charlie Morton to start the home opener on Friday, also on five days rest.
