The Atlanta Braves will look to avoid a sweep and snap a two-game skid in the process when they wrap up their season series against the Philadelphia Phillies on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. This will be the second straight week that the Braves and Phillies meet on the World Wide Leader’s showcase game.
After falling in extra innings Friday, Zach Eflin held Atlanta’s offense in check Saturday in a 4-1 loss that dropped Atlanta to 18-14 on the season. The Phillies have now won five straight games and are back at .500 for the season at 14-14 and just two games back of the Braves.
UPDATE - Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos announced that newly acquired starter Tommy Milone is in Philadelphia and will start Sunday’s series finale. Milone allowed four hits and two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings in his last start for the Orioles in Tampa Bay. He has gone at least five innings in four of his six starts this season.
Brian Snitker announced Saturday that Huascar Ynoa will make his third start of the season in what will likely be another bullpen game. Sunday will be Ynoa’s first start since August 12 and he has yet to throw more than 48 pitches in any outing. His last appearance came on August 21 against the Phillies where he allowed two hits and one run in two innings of relief. He has allowed five hits and three runs in 3 1/3 innings as an opener.
The Phillies will counter with veteran right-hander Jake Arrieta who is coming off a good outing against the Nationals. Arrieta allowed three hits and one run over five innings while throwing just 54 pitches before rain ended his night early. Arrieta matched up against the Braves back on August 8 allowing three hits while striking out six over six shutout innings.
Adam Duvall is expected to be available for the Braves after leaving Friday’s game due to a sore right Achilles. Freddie Freeman extended his hitting streak to 12 straight games with a single in Saturday’s loss. Freeman is hitting .386/.481/.659 with two homers and eight walks during the streak.
ESPN will provide its regular Sunday night broadcast featuring Matt Vasgersian and Alex Rodriguez on ESPN. The game will also feature an alternate Statcast broadcast on ESPN2 that will be called by the trio of Jason Benetton, Eduardo Perez and Mike Petriello.
