MLB rejects union’s proposal for longer season, will not send counter-proposal

MLB owners rejected the most recent proposal from the MLBPA on Wednesday, citing the 114-game schedule as a sticking point. MLB has stated that they will not issue a counter-proposal, though the sides will continue negotiations. Regardless, the longer these proceedings drag on, the less time that remains for a season to be played. If there is one absolute certainty right now, it’s that baseball should be played as soon as possible.

This Day in Braves History: Atlanta acquires Nate McLouth from Pirates

The Braves made a trade on June 3rd, 2009 that brought outfielder Nate McLouth to Atlanta. The Pirates received outfielder Gorkys Hernandez along with pitchers Jeff Locke and Charlie Morton, who of course went on to become one of the best pitchers in baseball years later as a member of the Astros.

Braves: Freddie Freeman

After taking Jason Heyward with their first pick (14th overall) in the 2007 Draft, the Braves used the latter of their two second-round picks to take Freddie Freeman at 78th overall. They enhanced the value of this strong Draft in ‘14, when they committed to Freeman long term and bid adieu to Heyward before he began what has been a steep decline. The 30-year-old Freeman has established himself as an annual NL Most Valuable Player Award candidate, producing a 35.7 bWAR over his 10-year career. The only other current Braves player who might end up being an even more valuable Draft choice is Mike Soroka, who was taken with the club’s second first-round pick (28th overall) in the ‘15 Draft. — Mark Bowman

Archer undergoes TOS surgery, out for 2020

Whether or not baseball is played in 2020, Pirates right-hander Chris Archer will not partake. The 31-year-old underwent surgery to relieve symptoms of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome, which can be a debilitating affliction for a pitcher. Best wishes to Archer as he embarks on a lengthy recovery.
