MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported on Wednesday evening that the San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays are interested in signing free agent Marcell Ozuna.

The Giants in particular are somewhat surprising, given that they are generally perceived to be in more of a rebuilding phase right now with their roster. The Blue Jays are less surprising suitors, with a young talented roster, and after having signed pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu to a large free agent contract last offseason. It is noteworthy that Morosi also reported that Toronto is more interested in former Astros’ outfielder George Springer than Ozuna, and that the Giants’ valuation of Ozuna is dependent on the presence of the designated hitter rule in the National League.

Obviously Atlanta was always going to have competition from other teams to sign Ozuna, after the season he had in 2020, but we are beginning to see the market become clear for his services. It is worth mentioning that Mark Bowman, Atlanta beat writer for MLB.com reported last week that Ozuna’s agent was expecting a multi-year offer from the Braves in December.

Should Ozuna opt to sign elsewhere, our own Scott Coleman explored some of the other options to bolster the Atlanta offense, which you can read here.
