The Atlanta Braves made it official Saturday announcing that they have signed free agent catcher Francisco Cervelli to a major league deal. The Braves optioned Alex Jackson back to Gwinnett and have activated Cervelli for tonight’s game in New York. To make room on the 40-man roster, Atlanta transferred lefty reliever Grant Dayton to the 60-day injured list.

Cervelli was released by the Pirates last week. Once an All-Star level catcher, his career has been hampered by reoccurring concussions. He has struggled for the most part this season appearing in 34 games with the Pirates while hitting .193/.279/.248 with one homer in 123 plate appearances. He is a career .269/.358/.376 hitter and will give Atlanta some veteran insurance behind Tyler Flowers and Brian McCann who is currently on the injured list with a knee injury.
