Murphy will likely come up from Gwinnett once the rosters expand in September

The Braves acquired catcher John Ryan Murphy from the Diamondbacks on Wednesday afternoon prior to the trade deadline. The Braves sent cash considerations to Arizona, according to Robert Murray of The Athletic.

Murphy, 28, was with Arizona’s Triple-A affiliate and will likely report to Gwinnett once the deal is finalized. One would assume he would be called up in September once the rosters expand and serve as injury insurance for Tyler Flowers and Brian McCann.

Murphy is regarded as a strong defensive asset, but he brings little at the plate. He owns a career .219/.265/.357 batting line across 673 plate appearances in the big leagues. He struck out in 40 percent of his 69 plate appearances this year with the Snakes.

This is a depth move that would’ve likely been made in August if the waiver trade deadline still existed. We will update this post once we learn additional details.

Update: The Braves have officially announced the deal with Arizona.
