‘It might be a while’ before Austin Riley takes outfield

The Braves are planning to give third baseman Austin Riley a look in the outfield at some point this spring but it won’t happen early in camp if it happens at all according to manager Brian Snitker.

“He’s going to be at third base the first game (Saturday),” manager Brian Snitker said. “I want to get him some work out there before I put him in some drills. It might be a while before he gets out there (in the outfield), if he does.”

Dan Winkler driven daily by 2018’s dispirited end

Given the amount of injuries that Dan Winkler has overcome his 2018 season is measured as a success despite a tough ending. Winkler appeared to wear down, struggled in September and was ultimately left off the team’s postseason roster. Winkler however tells the AJC’s Gabe Burns that he is using that disappointment as motivation for 2019.

Sad news out of Fort Myers on Thursday as long time Boston Globe baseball writer Nick Cafardo collapsed and died while at the Red Sox’s spring training facility. Cafardo was 62 and had been part of the Globe’s staff since 1989.

Twins Interested In Marwin Gonzalez

The Twins are reportedly showing interest in free agent utility man Marwin Gonzalez. The Athletic’s Dan Hayes reports that the Twins and Gonzalez have discussed a three-year contract but that there is strong competition from other teams.
