It is prospect week over at ESPN.com with Keith Law revealing his Top 100 list earlier this week. If you missed that, the Braves were well represented with nine prospects in the Top 100 including three in the Top 30. Law discussed his Top 100 list on Wednesday including a number of questions on Braves related topics.
On Friday, Law released a Top 20 of prospects that could have a big impact on their teams in 2019. The Braves have a pair of players on this list with Touki Toussaint and Mike Soroka coming in at No. 7 and No. 8.
Law’s reasoning is that both should be near the top as favorites to open the season as Atlanta’s fifth starter although one will not be needed for the first couple of weeks of the season. Toussaint finished 2018 strong and has a lot of upside but needs to throw strikes consistently. Soroka was impressive in a five-game cameo in Atlanta last season before a shoulder injury shut him down. If Soroka is healthy, then he has the pedigree to win the job although he might not have quite the upside of a guy like Toussaint. Whatever the case, these are two guys that we should see a lot during the 2019 season.
Third baseman Austin Riley was named as an honorable mention. Law has never been high on Riley as a prospect and this was the first season that Riley has landed on his Top 100 prospect list. Law praised his work at improving himself defensively while answering a lot of the questions he had at the plate. Riley’s biggest obstacle for 2019 may be finding a path to the major leagues where Atlanta currently has Josh Donaldson and Johan Camargo as options at third base.
