Despite having already secured the National League East, the Braves can help solidify their current standing over the next few days. While the Dodgers sit ½ game behind the Braves for the No. 2 seed in the NL, a mid-week sweep of the Mets could create some breathing room and possibly inch them closer to home field advantage (though the Cubs have a three-game lead in this department).
It is nice to already have the division locked down, but regarding home field advantage, tonight’s game is a must-win. It stands to reason that after most of the starters were provided two full days off (one of which was scheduled), the regular lineup should return to the field tonight to help support this endeavor. Although, I must admit, it was nice seeing the B-squad defeat Aaron Nola and the Phillies on Sunday.
This coming week will likely be used to rotate off-days for the starting regulars, as well as to hold open auditions for the final bench roles heading into the playoffs. Don’t be surprised if Adam Duvall, Lane Adams, and a revolving cast of under-utilized relievers gets the opportunity to make their case for the postseason.
Touki Toussaint will face Noah Syndergaard in what has the ingredients for a high-octane pitching matchup. Toussaint will attempt to further bolster his candidacy for the Braves’ playoff rotation, while Syndergaard will simply try to avoid getting hand, foot, and mouth disease again.
