The Atlanta Braves have made a roster move prior to Sunday’s series finale against the Miami Marlins. Infielder Rio Ruiz has joined the club in Miami while catcher Chris Stewart was designated for assignment to make room on the active roster.
Ruiz has spent the entire season with Triple-A Gwinnett where he has hit .269/.321/.393 with nine home runs in 126 games. He has appeared in 58 games at the major league level over the last two seasons and hasn’t had a lot of success hitting .193/.283/.307 with four home runs. He will slide into the role that Ryan Flaherty occupied on the bench before he was designated for assignment last week.
Stewart was called up to provide insurance while Kurt Suzuki was sidelined after being hit by a pitch in Pittsburgh. Stewart was on the Opening Day roster but has appeared in just five games while going 3-for-14 at the plate.
