So much news in such a short time! Here are the highlights.
Bryse Wilson has been recalled from Triple-A. He will be starting in place of Kevin Gausman tonight as the Braves kick off a series in Pittsburgh.
The Braves have not announced a reason for pushing back the start of Kevin Gausman, who was scheduled to be the guy on the hill for the Braves tonight. Wilson started the year in Florida and will be making a start at his fourth level this season. He made five starts at High-A, 15 starts at Double-A, and three starts at Triple-A this year before getting the call.
Accompanying roster moves include the designation for assignment of infielder Ryan Flaherty, and the outrighting of Chad Bell off the 40-man roster. This preserves an open 40-man roster spot for the Braves.
In order to make room on the active roster, INF Ryan Flaherty was designated for assignment. The club also outrighted LHP Chad Bell to Triple-A Gwinnett.— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) August 20, 2018
After an unexpectedly good April, Flaherty has been dreadful since, and has a miserable -0.3 fWAR with a 59 wRC+ in 172 PAs this season. Chad Bell has made 26 relief appearances for Gwinnett, and did not make it into a game during his cup of coffee with the big league club earlier this season, but has made four starts and 27 relief appearances in MLB action for the Tigers.
Bryse Wilson will be the youngest player to make a start this season, and the youngest Braves hurler to draw a start since Julio Teheran did so in 2011.
First pitch against the Pirates is scheduled for 7:05 pm EDT. Wilson will make his first big league pitch in the bottom of the first. Stay tuned and keep your eyes open.
