Much has been made of the “waves” of talent that the Braves have down in the farm system and what the future could hold for the Braves as they begin to arrive. Today, it appears that one of those waves will begin to crash.
It was hardly a secret that the Braves were going to be calling up Sean Newcomb from AAA as it was announced in an unofficial capacity by Snitker and others previously. This morning, the roster move happened and Newcomb officially joined the Braves roster.

The #Braves have selected the contract of LHP Sean Newcomb and have optioned RHP Jason Hursh to Triple-A @GwinnettBraves.

Newcomb, one of the Braves’ top pitching prospects, has been excellent for Triple-A Gwinnett this season. He has a 2.97 ERA and has struck out 74 batters in 57.2 innings this season while holding batters to just a .212 average against him. Walks have been an issue (33 on the season) as they have for his entire minor league career, but he has made big strides in pitching out of trouble and limiting hard contact which clearly made the Braves comfortable in calling him up.
The corresponding move of sending Jason Hursh down was also not surprising. After getting called up to Atlanta a few days ago, Hursh has made just one appearance out of the bullpen. At this point in his career, Hursh seems destined for the designated fill-in on the roster guy as needed, but does not appear to be in the organization’s long-term plans in the bullpen.
