Things were going great for Mike Foltynewicz most of Sunday afternoon.
He didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning, when he gave up a home run to straightaway center field to Domingo Santana. The homer tied the game, but the Braves got the lead back in the sixth.
But in the bottom of the sixth, Santana got a chance to hit with a pair of runners on after a two-out error by Dansby Swanson. He hit another dinger, a three-run one that would prove the decisive blow in the Milwaukee Brewers’ 4-3 win over the Atlanta Braves in the series finale at Miller Park.
Swanson booted a Hernan Perez grounder, apparently taking his eyes off the ball before fully fielding it. Santana smashed the next pitch into the seats, making moot an outstanding performance from Foltynewicz.
Foltynewicz allowed just four hits and one earned run to go along with six strikeouts on the day. It was his third straight high-quality start, but he still has no wins to show for his efforts.
The Braves gave Foltynewicz the early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Ender Inciarte led off the game with a single and later came around to score on Matt Kemp’s soft single that sailed just over the head of the second baseman.
After Foltynewicz allowed the home run to Santana in the fifth to tie the game at 1-1, Freddie Freeman responded with a roundtripper of his own, as he curled a breaking ball just over the fence in right.
Three consecutive singles in the seventh cut the Brewers lead to 4-3, as Jace Peterson and Swanson got hits before Brandon Phillips brought in Peterson with his pinch hit single.
Josh Collmenter pitched two innings of relief, striking out four hitters in a pair of scoreless frames.
Matt Garza made his second start of the year, and it was a good one. In 6 2⁄3 innings of work, he held the Braves to three runs on six hits, without walking a batter and striking out seven batters.
Former Brave farmhand Neftali Feliz got the save for Milwaukee, as he induced a Kurt Suzuki double play in the ninth after walking Nick Markakis to begin the inning.
The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Braves, and sees them end the road trip with a 4-4 record.
The Braves are back in action on Monday at 7:35 p.m. ET, as they begin a seven-game homestand against the Mets.
