The Atlanta Braves will open the 2017 MLB regular season on the road at Citi Field against the New York Mets. Here is a look at the schedule for the series as well as the probable starting pitchers.
Monday, April 3, 1:10 p.m. ET (ESPN, Fox Sports Southeast)
Julio Teheran will make his fourth straight opening day start for the Braves and has been notoriously tough on the Mets in his career. Teheran is 7-3 with a 2.36 ERA in 15 career outings against New York. He has been particularly good at Citi Field where he has allowed one run or less in six of his last eight starts.
Noah Syndergaard gets the opening day nod for the Mets after a stellar 2016 campaign. One of the hardest throwers in all of baseball, Syndergaard will be looking to build on last season’s success and lead New York back to the postseason. He hasn’t had a lot of success in his career against the Braves going 0-1 in three career starts with a 5.52 ERA.
Wednesday, April 5, 7:10 p.m. ET (Fox Sports South)
Bartolo Colon will make his regular season debut for the Atlanta Braves against his former team. Colon spent the past three seasons with the Mets winning 44 games while throwing just under 600 innings. Not bad for a guy who will turn 44 in May.
Injuries sidelined Jacob deGrom down the stretch in 2016 but he turned in another solid performance in 2016 posting a 3.04 ERA in 148 innings. He looked rested and healthy in spring training allowing just five earned runs in 15 1⁄3 innings. deGrom has had some success against the Braves in his career going 3-3 with a 1.90 ERA to go along with 56 strikeouts in just 52 innings.
Thursday, April 6, 7:10 p.m. ET (Fox Sports Southeast)
Jaime Garcia will make his first start in a Braves uniform in Thursday’s series finale. Garcia is looking to bounce back from a rough 2016 that saw him remain healthy enough to make 30 starts but saw him post a career worst 4.67 ERA. Garcia was solid this spring and has had some success against the Mets in his career going 3-1 with a 3.62 ERA in eight career starts.
The Dark Knight returns for the Mets on Thursday as Matt Harvey will make his first regular season start since July 4 of last season. Harvey’s season ended after he was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome. He struggled during the spring allowing 23 hits and 12 earned runs in just 18 1⁄3 innings. Harvey has had mixed results against the Braves in his career going 2-4 with a 3.61 ERA in seven career starts.
