How does Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez stack up against other MLB Managers?

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

Fredi Gonzalez is often a lightning rod for discussion among Atlanta Braves fans. Where though does he rank among other MLB Managers? The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo has released his annual manager rankings where he takes into account the opinions of players, managers, general managers, scouts and other front office personnel. Cafardo says that his rankings are based on track record as well as how their team performed last season.

Gonzalez checks in at No. 22 in Cafardo's rankings.

22. Fredi Gonzalez, Braves — Gonzalez has had to preside over a rolling roster the past two seasons. In such a setting, no manager can be properly evaluated. His past, however, suggests an evolving manager, one who had problems handling bullpens that he overcame.

Gonzalez gets penalized for Atlanta's sub par 2015 season but Cafardo also mentions his handling of bullpens which has drawn criticism from time to time. Gonzalez's status with the Braves is going to be one of the interesting storylines to follow in 2016. He was given a one-year extension last July that also included a club option for 2017.

For now, Gonzalez has survived the many changes made by the Braves over the last two offseasons. It remains to be seen, however, whether or not he will be the one to lead them into SunTrust Park and seemingly into the next phase of their rebuilding.
