Arizona Fall League Recap: Lucas Sims rebounds

New, 14 comments

Lucas Sims had a good outing for the Javelinas, although the rest of the Braves that played were a bit underwhelming

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Peoria Javelinas 5 vs. Mesa Red Sox 3

Box Score

  • Lucas Sims, SP: 3.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 BB
  • Daniel Winkler, RP: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 K, 1 BB
  • Johan Camargo, SS: 0-4
  • Joseph Odom, C: 0-4, 1 run scored

The Javelinas continued to recover from a somewhat rough start to the AFL season with a rally in the 6th inning to beat the Mesa Red Sox, 5-3. Lucas Sims got his second start of the AFL season and this one did go better than the first (he gave up a 3-run homer in the first game which marred an otherwise decent showing). Lucas went three innings while giving up one earned run, although he also only got a single strikeout. Lucas' strikeout numbers have been inconsistent this season and that will require some monitoring going forward, but it was encouraging to see him rebound in this start. Daniel Winkler pitched an inning of relief and while he did get two strikeouts, he also gave up a solo homer.

As for the Braves' position players...well, it was a relatively forgettable night. Connor Lien had the night off while Johan Camargo and Joseph Odom both went hitless with Odom scoring a run along the way. Overall, none of the prospects the Braves have sent to the AFL have impressed much. In fact, Mauricio Cabrera could end up playing himself out of his spot on the 40 man roster. He currently sports the 2nd worst ERA in the league (admittedly with a very small sample size thus far of two appearances) while only striking out two batters.
