Arizona Fall League Recap: Mauricio Cabrera struggles; 3 players make debut

It was far from a banner day for Braves prospects in the Arizona Fall League. All 4 players had below average games, with Johan Camargo having the only not-so-terrible game. Camargo, Joseph Odom, and Mauricio Cabrera made their debuts

(1-1) Surprise Saguaros 5 vs. (1-1) Peoria Javelinas 4

  • Mauricio Cabrera, RP: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K
  • Connor Lien, CF: 0-5, 1 K
  • Joseph Odom, C: 1-4, 1 K
  • Johan Camargo, SS: 1-4, 1 K

The Javelinas could not hold on to an early 3-1 lead, giving up 3 in the 7th to let Surprise take the lead. They battled back to tie in the 8th but were ultimately walked off in the bottom of the 10th inning. The Braves had 2 more prospects in action today than the first game but it was a pretty bad day all around. Johan Camargo had the best day of the group with his 1-4 performance in his Arizona Fall League debut. Joseph Odom also made his Fall League debut, knocking a base hit to center right before Camargo, but was wiped out on an inning ending double play. The main problem with Odom was his defense. He allowed a passed ball in both the 2nd and 3rd innings, and while neither led to a run it is unfortunate to see him having these defensive lapses. He allowed 4 passed balls in 478.1 defensive innings with Carolina this year. Connor Lien could not follow up his good performance yesterday. He went 0-5 on the night, popping out to the infield twice and striking out in another plate appearance. Mauricio Cabrera carried over much of the struggles he suffered with Mississippi and Carolina this year in his first outing. His first inning was somewhat wild but effective. He struck out 2 batters and allowed a base hit and no runs. he also threw a wild pitch that inning but it was of no consequence. The wheels really fell off for Cabrera in his second inning. He blew the save by allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, a walk, and 2 wild pitches while only recording 2 ground ball outs. He left a runner on base when he was pulled but Peoria managed to strand that man at second.

Hopefully things will go a little better for the Braves prospects on Thursday. They play at the Salt River Rafters at 6:35pm MT/8:35 PM ET. This will be Peoria's first night game of the season and their first interdivisional matchup.
