Take a Deep Breath and Begin to Reflect on the Aftermath

Yes, I was talking to myself with that title, and probably to many other dire-hard fans who saw the flurry of moves that happened, and some that didn't happen just before the trade deadline. The long and short of what has transpired in the last 48 hours is that the Atlanta Braves are an exponentially better ball club, and primed for another run at the postseason. To summarize, here is what happened:

First, the Braves acquired gold glove first baseman Mark Teixeira and veteran left-handed setup man Ron Mahay for catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, shortstop Elvis Andrus, and pitchers Matt Harrison, Beau Jones, and Neftali Feliz.

Second, the Braves sent deposed fifth starter Kyle Davies to the Royals for right-handed closer/setup man Octavio Dotel.

Third, the Braves sent deposed lefty setup man Wil Ledezman and young left-handed reliever Will Startup to the Padres for power lefty setup man Royce Ring.

Another way to look at it:

Acquired:
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Ron Mahay, LHP
Octavio Dotel, RHP
Royce Ring, LHP

Traded Away:
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C
Elvis Andrus, SS
Matt Harrison, LHP
Beau Jones, LHP
Neftali Feliz, RHP
Kyle Davies, RHP
Wil Ledezma, LHP
Will Startup, LHP

So we basically swapped players at a 2-for-1 rate. Most of the players we traded away were minor leaguers. Going by their current assignments:

2 - major leaguers
2 - triple-A
1 - double-A
3 - single-A

What made this a more intense deadline was how long it took for the Teixeira deal to get finalized. That held up the Dotel deal, and may have held up other deals. For a moment the Braves were rumored to be heavily in on possibly getting starter Bronson Arroyo from the Reds, but I'm guessing they asked for too much and time ran out.

There is a lot of speculation that the Braves may pursue other deals that would involve getting players through waivers. One of the big names there is closer Bob Wickman. This could simply be speculation based on the Braves acquiring Dotel, who is also a closer, but I think the team will hold on to Wicky. They view Dotel as purely a setup man - a role he is better suited for.

From where I sit we still have a bit of a problem fitting all of our players into a 25-man roster. We have three first baseman - Teixeira, Franco, and Thorman. The odds on favorite to be out of the mix there is Scott Thorman, who cannot be sent to the minors. The team may try to push him through waivers, but they've got to make room on the roster tomorrow, so I see them possibly designating him for assignment, much like they did Ledezma.

The other problem with our roster is fitting all of our relievers into the mix - we acquired three bullpenners today, and only really have room for two of them. We've already sent Paronto to triple-A, and we could easily send Jose Ascanio back down (he was just called up). But how do we fit in all three guys - Mahay, Dotel, and Ring? Are we not going to keep Ring in the majors? It's in interesting dilemma, and it may be they just keep those guys down in the minors for a month until rosters expand in September. If nothing else, we are well protected in the bullpen against injury or ineffectiveness.

Bronson Arroyo...
...didn't want to leave Cincinnati.  Maybe that made John Schuerholz think twice.  According to ESPN, he had a "program" that he liked.  Must have been a drug program... how could he not want to come play for Bobby Cox on a winning team?

since they traded salty
they didnt need to make room for corky, so they sent paronto down for Tex.

Golly
that would be a whole slew of newbies!

I think...
Escobar and Thorman need to be taken off too. The previous looks to be a Brave for the long haul and the latter is out of options.

I would guess...
Thorman will be Designated for assignment
Ascanio Optioned to AAA

Making room for Mahay and Dotel

Ring was assigned to Richmond.

Does Yates have any options left?

by mordecai on Jul 31, 2007 8:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

wrong
Thorman is out of options

by RehabReject on Jul 31, 2007 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No he's right..
..Thorman can be DFA'd..because he IS out of options. If he had options he'd be well..optioned. When one is out of said options you have to be "Designated for Assignment"

You don't have to be
out of options to be DFA'd. I see players all the time DFA and they go back to the minors.

That's because..
..they clear waivers. If your out of options, you have to clear waivers. Hence, being DFA'd.

My guess...
...yeah, Yates has option left, and I think it's the best interest to send him to Richmond and get some rest.

How AWESOME was it to see that lumberjack Teixeira walk around in a Braves uni in the dugout?!!??!

Can we call Tex...
something other than Tex? How bout "Boomstick"? or "tiny"? or "carl". I like that. It has a nice ring to it.

So, if you see a guy in the all you can eat seats yelling "CARL ROCKS!" when Teixeira comes to bat you know who it is.

Nickname
Is it just me, or does he look a little goofy...maybe its the very prominent chin.  Or maybe its the oh-so-close-but-not-quite-unibrow.  Perhaps I'm longing too much for the Adam LaRoche days.  Regardless,   I agree...the Tex nickname needs to go.  Boomstick is a nice one!

I'm hoping inspiration will come
for a new nickname. Let's see . . . he went to Ga Tech . . . there's a lot of material there . . .

by Velcro Vernacular on Aug 1, 2007 8:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps...
the Ramblin' Tex?
Doesn't get rid of the 'Tex' part, but uses his GT past....

I'm considering Buzz
Cause of the Tech thing, and also he reminds me of Buzz Lightyear, especially with the reception he got last night. Maybe too dorky though . . . ??

Not Really a nickname but...
...I may have found the perfect "DugOut" name for Tex, I just can't figure out how to spell it so people get it.

THEnewSHERIFFintown

Do ya'll get that without me having to explain it?

Too much of a stretch?

Teixeira is pronounced like Ta-Share-A --right, kinda like Sheriff?

If they can pull off Andraeiouandsometimesyw then B and Jon can surely pull of THEnewSHERIFFintown.

So, yea, we could call him The Sheriff, but it's a bit long for a nickname.

that's pretty good!
Nothing beats Smoltz's Dugout nickname, though.

by Velcro Vernacular on Aug 1, 2007 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

jewish smores...
...or something along those lines.  my personal favorite is Diaz's Dugout name.

As I Lay Diaz.

This is awesome
Teixeira seemed genuinely excited to be in the dugout, he seemed to be smiling everytime they cut to him. The trades alone really put a spark in the team tonight

by mordecai on Aug 1, 2007 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know....
...he really looked like he was happy to be on a team that can win.

Bobby's got Tex...
...penciled in the cleanup spot in his debut tonight.  :>)

Andruw's in the 5 hole.

by kray1000 on Aug 1, 2007 6:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Definitely
I would have put at least McCann ahead of him, maybe Frenchy, but their is a lefty on the mound.
