Braves Acquire Royce Ring
From a press release:
Ring, 26, appeared in 27 games for Portland (AAA) in 2007, going 4-0 with a 1.99 ERA, a .188 opponents’ batting average and 44 strikeouts in 31.2 innings pitched. He also appeared in 15 games for the Padres this season and posted a 1-0 record with a 3.60 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 15.0 innings pitched.
NOT STARTUP! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
And what the F? Now we have 9 relievers! There must be some more trades happening... must be!
Update [2007-7-31 16:41:56 by gondeee]:
Roster moves made before today's game:
The Braves purchased the contract of catcher Corky Miller from triple-A Richmond and optioned RHP Chad Paronto to Richmond. Why does Brayan Pena get no love? The Corkster was hitting a robust .210 at triple-A - huh!?
We still have too many relief pitchers on our roster, right? (1) Wickman, (2) Soriano, (3) Moylan, (4) Yates, (5) Villarreal, and now (6) Mahay, (7) Dotel, (8) and Ring. I'm delerious...
Update [2007-7-31 20:26:33 by gondeee]:
To address the Corky Miller situation; the Braves need to have at least three catchers who were called up before September 1st, and are thus eligible for postseason rosters. This protects them against any possible injury to either McCann or his backup. Still, I’m guessing Corky stays up here, and Pena is recalled in September. For whatever reason, the Braves like to keep a "veteran" guy in the backup catcher role regardless of what kind of offensive player he is.

Huh?
I like Will Startup too much. We better be dealing Ring to somebody for a starter (maybe w/ Wicky?). But the deadline's already come and gone- just waiting for announcements to trickle out, I guess.

Startup
I really thought he could have been the answer to our LOOGY worries in the pen last season, but he kept hiccupping in AAA.
JS wouldn't have traded him, especially with the UGA ties, if he thought he could do it in the bigs. He would have jusy released Ledezma and called up Startup. Royce throws in the 90's from the left side so that must be the difference that caused him to trigger the deal.

Man..
Salty got the call. And now with Salty gone, you'd have thought he'd be the one called up. But no, Corky Miller gets the call.
Both of Richmond's catchers (miller, franco) were/are hitting horrible.

I could hit better with a...
Corky Miller's batting the last three years:
2004 CIN 1-for-39 (.026)
2005 MIN 0-for-12 (.000)
2006 BOS 0-for-4 (.000)
That's 1 for his last 55.

Relax!
Ring (AAA) 4-0 record, 5 HLD and 1 SV, 1.99 ERA and 1.04 WHIP (11 BB and 22 H) with 44 K through 31.2 IP in 27 G.
Startup (AAA) 3-2 record, 6 HLD and 1 SV, 2.23 ERA and 1.14 WHIP (17 and 38 H) with 47 K through 48.1 IP in 42 G.
Royce has struggled a bit at the ML level in his young career, but he's been to the show and should be ready to help in Atlanta right away. He's only 3.5 years older than Startup and will be under team control for another 3 years, I believe. Kind of a lateral move in my opinion (much like I thought the McBride-for-Ledezma deal was) but this one makes more sense because Ring will hit the ground running, where as Ledezma was a starter masquerading as a reliever being squeezed into the wrong role (LOOGY). The 'pen is much stronger now than it was this morning, not because of Dotel, but rather because of the solid lefties added.

Relievers
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't we keeping Ascanio instead of Paronto?

About Corky and Peña
both got some good rips in that game, but they still lost.
despite the fact that brayan is younger and switch hits, i guess the plan is to make him an outfielder. and we all know bobby has a soft spot for older guys, which is possibly why corky got the nod over peña.
