It's Done!

Hot off the presses:

A preliminary agreement has been reached between the teams for Atlanta to receive Teixeira and left-handed reliever Ron Mahay from Texas for catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, minor league shortstop Elvis Andrus and two minor league pitchers.

The Fort-Worth Star Telegram, citing a Rangers source, is reporting that the two pitchers Texas will receive are 19-year-old right-hander Nestali Feliz and another pitcher to be determined.

I'll have more when we know more.

Update [2007-7-30 13:25:25 by gondeee]:

It looks like it will be Salty, Elvis, Harrison, and Feliz, though no report has confirmed all of these guys yet. Coming back to us is obviously Teixeira, along with Ron Mahay. Upon first blush I didn't like this trade, but I'm starting to warm up to it (a friend talked me into the benefits - I'll have more later)

Mark Teixeira's stats for your enjoyment:

Update [2007-7-30 14:11:51 by gondeee]:

Here is a great piece from Will Carroll at Baseball Prospectus that may put some Braves fan’s concerns about the trade to rest:

I spent much of last night trying to figure out if Matt Harrison was injured and thus out of the Mark Teixeira deal. Turns out that he is having some shoulder problems, and doesn't appear to be part of the final deal. It's this type of thing that makes this time of the year so interesting--imagine if Jon Daniels had pulled the trigger on the deal a day earlier and ended up with damaged goods. This type of pressure on Daniels and every GM has to be kept in mind--nobody wants a lemon, so everyone has homework to do. Criticism of Daniels around the league has been strong, but the level-headed John Schuerholz stuck to his task and got it done. There's little doubt that Mark Teixeira makes the Braves better, and it will be years before we know if the Rangers are better or if the cost was too high for the Braves.

Update [2007-7-30 16:6:20 by gondeee]:

The Mississippi Braves press release I just got stated that Matt Harrison has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, so I'm guessing he will NOT be a part of this trade.

Awful!
What a bad deal for Atlanta UNLESS we can resign him to an extension!!! If we dont sign Tex to an extension this might be JS worst move EVER!!! We could not EVEN get CJ Wilson in that damn deal!!! Instead we get a 36 year old Lefty!!! At least you would think we could have gotten Gagne, at the very least!!! We will probably end up having NOTHING to show for this deal in 2009!!!

I'm going to have to agree with you
..if we can't resign Tex and being a Boras client it's highly unlikely come 2009 we'll be left with nothing but holding our jock in our hands.

And
two World Series rings...yeah...I said it!

by themurph on Jul 30, 2007 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You seriously think...
..that ONE GUY, is going to bring us two World Series rings? You might want to remove your rose colored glasses and look at the big picture.

Tex is maybe worth 3 wins (2.9 WARP1), we still need pitching and a 30 someodd year old bullpen guy isn't going to help out the rotation. Not to mention I highly doubt we resign him at the end of 2008, why? Well I'm glad you asked: two words - Scott Boras.

by Rain Delay on Jul 30, 2007 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This deal was done to win rings
screw WARP...I see it like this (my opinion) - Tex allows our offense to be channeled more through Chipper because with Tex hitting 4th Chipper will now see more fastballs (one would think) and he is the hottest 'hitter' in the bigs if you look at the stats since the All-Star break last season.  Barroid has a higher OPS.

Pete Rose once said, and I bet a lot of baseball people agree, that you can tell the most about a hitter from his last 500 at-bats.  We score more runs and our starters can stay in the game longer and maybe squeak out a few of those 6-5 or 5-4 games.  Our pen gets more rest and they become more effective.  Especially Soriano.

Don't squirt your shorts because I disagree with you, and unless you must, spare me the stats like WARP and VORP.  That stuff doesn't tell me a lot about the rest of this season.

by themurph on Jul 30, 2007 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How silly does this sound?
Tex is maybe worth 3 wins (2.9 WARP1)

What?  I know where your coming from and I understand the formula, but if you think we will win just three more games with Tex than we would have without him then I disagree.

I'll talk to you in October

by themurph on Jul 30, 2007 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thats fine, whatever...
...but is Tex going to pitch for us? As much as having Tex is going to be some what nice, where's the pitching we need?

Buddy is due to come down to earth any day now, and Jo-Jo just isn't ready and he's proved it.

oh and
..we don't make a sniff at October without starting pitching.

Another rumor from a radio station
Braves get: Riske, Larue
KC gets: Thorman and prospect

well
if you look at the Braves 2007 projected win total computed using the Bill James methoed, those three wins would put us from third to FIRST! I love JS because he makes big moves exactly when the team and the fans need it.

JS
isn't going to be around much longer. He wants to see the team go win another championship before he quits.

Ceilings
The thing that bothers me is that the guys we gave up have pretty high ceilings - regardless of what level they're at. Andrus "could" be the next Jeter. Feliz could be a great 100-mph fireballer. Harrison is like a Glavine-lite type pitcher. And Salty - we all know what he can do. This trade would look a lot better if we had gotten Wilson instead of Mayday. I dunno, the jury's still out. If we win a world series, then perhaps we can forgive JS for dealing away so many young studs.

by gondeee on Jul 30, 2007 1:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

$0.02
While it definetly hurts to lose both Salty and Andrus (who I was really looking forward to watching), it's a move that has to be made.  With Andruw still manning CF, Chipper hitting as good as he ever has, and Smoltz and Hudson pitching strong...this might be the last time we have a legitimate shot at winning the WS.

Andruw is gone next year, and who knows how much longer Smoltz and Chipper will play after next year.  IMO, this deal sets us up to contend for the remainder of this season and next year.

And as was stated previously, Cox and JS will probably be gone by then anyways.

sports illustrated
The sides reached a compromise agreement after Texas sought a substitute for pitching prospect Matt Harrison due to injury concerns. According to the Fort Wort Star-Telegram, the Braves have agreed to send pitching prospect Nestali Feliz and a player to be named later instead of Harrison

We had originally traded Harrison in this deal
but after it was announced, he was taken out because of injury conserns.

free agent
Andruw Jones, Edgar Renteria and Mike Hampton big contract we should be able to come up with 12 million to be able to sign him. The next move we should make is to deal Bob Wickman to the Indians for Cliff Lee and maybe another minor Leagure Wickman is not reliable enough for the Braves to be able to count on in a tight ball game.

No thanks on Cliff Lee.  Though, I would say ax the fat man.  I can't stand when Wicky comes into the game.

....Chris Reitsma...or Danny Kolb....

Cliff Lee?
..you mean the guy that's had a terrible terrible year and was recently sent to Triple A?? You're kidding right.

Do research, just don't grab names out of thin air.

Cliff Lee
is cheap and could help. Bullpen/Starting, whatever.
http://blabberinbraves.blogspot.com/

by Chipper on Jul 30, 2007 1:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He's in Triple A..
..now and for good reason.

He was stinking it up in Cleveland, so they sent him packing to Triple.

Do just a tad of research and you'd know these things before just pulling names out of a hat.

by Rain Delay on Jul 30, 2007 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It'd be an alright deal
He'd come cheap and could stable our staff with a situational lefty in the pen. He'd be better in the NL with easier lineups.
http://blabberinbraves.blogspot.com/

by Chipper on Jul 30, 2007 1:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

sure...
..why not just add another crappy pitcher. Because we need more crappiness out of the pen or in the rotation for that matter.

Just because he'd come cheap, doesn't make him a good choice.

Cliff Lee = Mark Redman

by Rain Delay on Jul 30, 2007 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cliff Lee is bad
My Dad is a die hard Indians fan and every time I call home I have to listen to him bitch about Cliff Lee.  I'd rather have Mark Wholers and his curse back than Cliff Lee.

by JDMaker1 on Jul 30, 2007 1:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Exactly..
..but it seems no one wants to actually listen to reason. Cliff Lee is horrible, not to mention who even said he was available.

by Rain Delay on Jul 30, 2007 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I watched him in Cleveland
I saw him pitch in Cleveland last month.  He got shelled.  I have no desire to see him anywhere near our starting rotation.

Lee v. Davies
Cliff Lee = Left Handed Kyle Davies

Evil Cliff v. Good Cliff

by JDMaker1 on Jul 30, 2007 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

please dont turn this
topic to be about Cliff Lee. Who cares about Cliff Lee. The Braves just signed Tex and im getting drunk cuz of it! whos with me? I used to stare at our lineup and say that this is among the best in the NL. Now I stare at it and I think lineup is the best in the MAJORS. who cares about pitching when we average 7 runs a game now.

by Braveheart on Jul 30, 2007 3:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Great Idea!
I'm with you!  Now that you mention it, I will have a couple to celebrate the Tex deal and wait for the Dotel deal and early this evening the Braves have stoked the Bronson Arroyo fires again.  So maybe John is going for the hat trick!?

He might even trade his kid before the night's over!

by Mike de La Hoz on Jul 30, 2007 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's great!
We desperately needed a big-bat everyday first baseman and a lefty reliever (actually, I wish we could get another too), and Salty's too good to be BMac's backup.  He deserves to play and in the AL, he could catch, play first, or DH and be in the lineup everyday.  I'm happy for him.

So does that mean we'll bring Brayan Pena back up?  I know Matty Diaz can catch if necessary, but Baby needs his fifth-day-off backup guy to be a regular catcher.  (Pete Orr can catch too.  Can we send Woodward down and bring Pete Orr back up?  I miss him.)

And speaking of lefty relievers, do you think the Braves will be calling up Will Startup anytime soon?  He's not doing bad, but considering he's so young in the organization, I don't know if they'll let him come to The Show so soon.

by Lauren T. on Jul 30, 2007 3:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This is awesome.
well said Rainisbeautiful.

The Braves immediately upgrade two of their weak spots.  Teixeira not only hits for power, but has a .397 OBP this year, has won two straight Gold Gloves, and is a switch-hitter.

Mahay can easily replace Ledezma.

Love this trade, JS.

The NL is ours.
