Weekend Dump: Jeter to retire; Fregosi passes; Phillies get older with Burnett

Jim McIsaac

Welcome to the Dump.

2014 to be Jeter's final season - NY Times

He'll likely get the farewell tour treatment a la Chipper Jones. Like Chipper with the Braves, one cannot picture the Yankees without Derek Jeter after what will be his 20th season in pinstripes.

Baseball lifer Jim Fregosi dies - USA Today

Fregosi passed away early Friday due to a stroke. He made his major-league debut at 19 and spent 18 years as a player, earning six All-Star selections as a member of the Angels. Two days after his playing career ended, he embarked on his managerial career, winning 1,028 games with four different teams before spending the last 13 years as a special assistant in the Braves front office.

Dodgers close to deal with Cuban shortstop - LA Times

23-year-old Erisbel Arruebarruena is known more for his defense than his offense. At the least, he serves as organizational depth with the team's top shortstop prospect Corey Seager moving to third base, and will probably start the season in the minors. He was a teammate of Yasiel Puig's while in Cuba.

Franklin Gutierrez will not play in 2014 - ESPN

He's had six DL stints in the last three years since winning his first Gold Glove in 2010. A GI illness and two hammy strains limited him to 41 games in 2013.

Phillies sign A.J. Burnett - NBC

Because the Phillies don't have enough old guys on the team already. He reportedly walked away from a one-year deal with the Pirates for $12 million.

Orioles sign Korean pitcher - ESPN

3 years, $5.725 million plus incentives. He was considered the second-best starter in Korea behind current Dodgers pitcher Hyun-jin Ryu.
