Padres Top Braves in Extra-Inning Affair
Kyle Phillips’s 10th inning homer off of George Sherrill was enough to seal a 3-2 win for the San Diego Padres on Memorial Day. The brother of former Met, Jason Phillips, crushed his first ever big league blast into the right field seats on the second pitch of extra frames. Fortunately for Phillips, a Braves patron was disgusted enough to chuck the memorabilia back towards Mather, who had taken over in right late in the game.
Today’s match was the eighth extra-inning game of the last 18 and was one that could have swung the Braves’ way had it not been for a few blunders in the field. A Hudson throwing error allowed Eric Patterson to advance to third and later score on a groundout by Ryan Ludwick. It didn’t take long for the Braves to even up the score at one apiece, though. McCann ripped a double into deep left center that scored Prado from first in the bottom half of the inning.
Then, once again in the third, the Braves missed an opportunity to double up the Padres ace, Aaron Harang, on a fly ball to center fielder Jordan Schafer. The inexperienced base runner was caught too far off of second, but Schafer’s throw was off the mark, and Dan Uggla bobbled the ball to further ensure that the pitcher got back safely. Harang ultimately booked it home in the graceful fashion that you would expect from a pitcher of his body type, driven in by Ryan Ludwick. McCann wasted no time in tying the game up for a second time, though, driving in Martin Prado once more.
Scott Proctor and Cory Gearrin pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings, respectively after Hudson finished six strong frames. Venters got into a one-out bases-loaded jam in the top half of the ninth before inducing a game-saving 3-2-3 double play from pinch hitter Jorge Cantu. The third score was the charm for the Padres though, as neither McCann nor any other Brave could answer in the bottom of the tenth following the Phillips tater.
Fortunately, Hudson looked to be back to full health after missing his last start with a lower back strain. He notched an impressive seven strikeouts, five hits, and just one earned run in six and walked no one.
The offense will get going tomorrow…

That's all that needs to be said about this one.
Sure, there were other mistakes, but his awful fielding combined with awful hitting is the #1 reason we lost today. And it’s not even close.

What awful fielding? I didn’t see any.

I didn't see any either, but Uggla is apparently to blame for everything now.
Huddy and Schafer made some critical defensive mistakes and Uggla certainly wasn’t the only one that left runners on base, and yet somehow he’s the number one reason we lost today. I don’t get it. I know he’s struggling a ton, but to say he’s the number one reason we lost just makes no sense to me.
Fine.
If you can look past the weak grounder he let go under his glove (Run #1), the botched double play (Run #2) and the 0-3 at the plate seeing a total of 13 pitches (included his walk), that’s your choice.
Sure, the fielding plays weren’t easy, and Schafer is more to blame on the botched double play; however, Uggla is doing absolutely NOTHING to help this team now. Make a play, even if it’s not an easy one. He’s a MLB 2B, so, in theory, he should be able to make difficult plays, too. If he catches the throw from Schafer, he still beats Harang back to the bag, easily. He has to know Harang isn’t Ricky Henderson out there, and Schafer’s throw was going maybe 10 mph.
I’m not even throwing Huddy and Schafer under the bus right now. Seriously? They are contributing to this team. Uggla can’t do anything right.* Heck, Uggla is making more than Huddy and Schafer combined.
So, yeah, it’s his fault, but that’s my opinion. You don’t have to share it.
*Sorry. He had one good game against Halladay weeks ago. I’ll give him credit for that.

So Dan Uggla
is not very good right now.

This...
I don’t want people to confuse my current frustration with an overall opinion of Uggla and his contract.
He’ll turn it around, but until he does, he’s an obvious drain on our team.
Also, as frustrated as I am, I’m sure he’s 1000 times more frustrated.

1. I hate the Phillies.
2. I hate so freakin’ many extra-inning games.
3. I hate the Phillies.
4. I hate that Dan Uggla still can’t hit when he’s supposed to.
5. I hate that our offense is so consistently inconsistent.
6. I hate the Phillies.
I propose that Phillies opponents wear Braves jerseys so the Phillies will crap themselves having to play the Braves everyday. We’re the only ones that seem to want to beat them on a regular basis.

I know we've all been obnoxious with Schafer love lately..
But after today’s game
6 games – 7 hits – 6 walks – 2 Ks – .433 OBP
That’s fantastic. The 3.0 K/BB ratio really surprises me though, as he had a pretty bad ratio in AAA this year. Now all of a sudden he gets called up and is our most patient hitter, drawing 6-9 pitches per PA.
Whatever has clicked for him, I hope it sticks and I hope he does too.
I’ve got Jack Johnson and Tom O’Leary waiting for ya, right here
I think the time has come to either put Uggla in the 8th spot or sit him.
He looked horrible, yet again, at the plate. It does not look like he is going to “break out if it” anytime soon. The man can’t solidly hit fastballs down the middle and whiffs on breaking pitches. I do not pretend to know what exactly is wrong with him, but it is quite apparent now that it isn’t just a passing slump…he has been slumping since the season began two months ago. Ether he needs to sit and work on his vision and mechanics or he needs to hit in a spot where it does not matter what he does. Keeping him in the middle of the line-up has been killing us because he has become an auto-out. Even his outs have not been productive because he either hits a weak grounder to the shortstop or strikes out.
I loved the Uggla trade and I believe he is a truly great hitter….when he is normal; but he has not been normal for 2 months now and his lack of production in the heart of the line-up (in any manner) is killing our offense.
Post-Game Notes...
-Tim Hudson has now allowed 10 earned runs total in the first inning this season. By allowing 2 earned runs through 6 innings, he lowered his ERA to 3.75. He walked no one and struck out 7.
-Scott Proctor, Cory Gearrin, and Jonny Venters each pitched an inning of scoreless relief. George Sherrill, who had been fantastic the entire month of May, gave up the go-ahead home run.
-Brian McCann was 3-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. His average soared from .283 to .304 in the last 4 games or so.
-Uggla was 0-5. He is now hitting a horrid .178, but is tied for the team lead in home runs with 7.
-After last night’s game, there are 3 players with 7 home runs: Jason Heyward, Dan Uggla, and Martin Prado. Only 1 of those 3 are helping the offense right now.
-After today’s game, I calculated the ERA of the team. The starter’s ERA is 3.25. The bullpen’s ERA is 2.41. The team ERA is 2.97, one of the best in baseball right now.
-After last night’s game, Jair Jurrjens lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.51.
-Craig Kimbrel leads rookies in saves with 15.

Ok, I never understood why Parrish was brought in to be the hitting coach
However, I keep hearing Braves fans talk about this ‘lack of patience.’
Prior to today’s game, the Braves were 6th in the league in BB with 178. Sure, that’s not as good as it was last year, but the offense is suffering because of a .243 AVG. Oddly, they’re 4th in the league in total bases……
I know when many talk about patience at the plate, they’re not just referring to walks. But the fact is that this offense just doesn’t have many players that consistently hit for a good AVG. And it seems like they’re trying to over compensate for that by swinging for the fences on a routine basis, which is obviously making the problem worse.
Baserunning, wow. I don’t know what else there is to say about this team on the bases. It’s gonna have to improve, there’s no way they get by at this rate. We’re the only team in baseball that have been caught stealing more than they’ve succeeded, and it’s not even close. 10 SB against 16 caught? I’m no expert, but surely that’s cost the team at least one or two wins…….If they keep this up past the break, they’d be much better off not attempting a single steal for the rest of the season.
Patience running the bases seems to be a problem. Only Schafer is good at it.
As you said, not hitting for avg. How many Gidp’s are we up to now? Another big problem. Errors don’t do us any favors either. Dan Uggla really needs to go somewhere and get fixed.
Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher
Errors haven't been a huge problem
Prior to today the Braves have only had 27, 32 is the league average.

I know it's just seems they come at the worst times.
Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher
Obviously....
But my point was that they’re somewhat doing their job in terms of walks. The biggest reason for the low OBP is the teams AVG…..
When as a team you’re only hitting at a .243 clip, chances are your OBP isn’t going to be too great.
by Undocorkscrew on May 30, 2011 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions
They are swinging at more balls outside of the strike zone so even if they make contact its weak contact. That is a very big lack of patience. Their BB% is 8th in the NL down to 8.6% when they were 10.1% last year. That’s a huge decrease so far and indicates significantly less patience this year. Don’t look at the total number of walks because the Braves have played so many extra innings. Look at the % and the lack of patience will become more clear.

Damn
Tim Collins has a 2.73 ERA in 30 IP despite a 7.3 BB/9. I don’t think that guy is ever going to improve his control.
On Schafer's SB attempt in the ninth..
I was sitting directly behind the plate and it looked like he easily slid in under the tag. I haven’t watched any replays yet, but I would be curious to see what someone thought that actually saw a replay.

He was both....
He was safe, but his hand slid past the bag with nothing else touching it except for the Padres’ fielders glove (which included the ball). That in turn makes him out. His foot did not come through until later, and where he slid, his body didn’t go over the bag.
He was as safe as Posey was Out

AAA
Would Uggla accept an assignment in AAA? He needs to work on his swing. Playing with an automatic out would be acceptable if the rest of the team was hitting well, but we can’t afford it right now.
Twitter:ChopAttack
the Braves
played with Melky had 115 starts last year and Nate had 68 so i think the Braves are ok playing with an automatic out
Melky nor Nate are guys with the second most HRs in the NL over the last five years.
Benching Uggla for a couple of games might be a last-ditch effort to let him clear his head. If that doesn’t work, maybe letting him (hopefully) pound some AAA pitching for a couple weeks is in order.

and this offense is still struggling.
OT: A ground breaking anthropological discovery
I have discovered a sub-species of homo sapiens sapiens.
Wilmas: Primitive women, primarily from New Jersey, who may either attack their Italian husbands (also known as Freds) with frying pans or might assault (whether inadvertently or in a moment of anger) innocent bystanders with massive quantities of hairspray. These women can be identified by animal print clothing, the inclusion of large rocks as wardrobe items, annoying voices, and constant demands that dinosaurs (though they prefer minorities) do their house work.
For more information please see Real Housewives of New Jersey.
Guess who has a .320 average in 25 May games?
Alexander Gonzalez. This in combination with his stellar defense and I can only assume the people who still rag on him haven’t been paying attention.
While the offense sputtered and players went down with injury, AGon stepped his game up and did everything he possibly could. Lest we forget.
I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was. - Muhammad Ali
How do I feel? Like f**king sucess - Jordan Schafer
I personally have loved his defense. It’s a pleasure to watch him play SS. I never expected an offensive juggernaut and these numbers are a pleasant surprise. But for a ground-ball oriented pitching staff, a strong anchor at SS like Gonzo (but I hope he and Dan work on who covers on a ball to the pitcher) is a huge plus.
I think it goes with out saying that we shouldn’t expect the kind of offense he has provided in May for an entire season though.
however
still hitting terribly with RISP

9 for 73. 2 extra base hits.
wow.
great job dan. 50 million well earned.
Actually...
He only earned $1.11MM for that 20-game stint. I’m not saying that’s a good thing, but you’re blowing everything way out of proportion.

Some game notes
Fredi needs to give Venters about 4 days off. He looked absolutely worn down today.
I guess the Schafer call was baseball balancing out the call at the plate against the Reds.
Good to see Hudson return strong.
I’ve yet to hear anyone ask “Why the hell are we running?” 4-pitch walk, our best hitter at the plate (you know, the guy that won the game the night prior), and we decide to change the game with our weakest weapon, stealing bases? Why try to win with your weakest attack? Makes no sense to me.

fair enough… demand away. it seems to work for the team…
in fact, i think you need to make a list of demands and have the mods post it on the front page so the Braves can clearly read it… (I’m not being sarcastic or snarky either)… The Braves listen to your demands. It’s a simple fact. :-) Can I suggest demanding offense for the game today? :-)
