by Mr. Sanchez on Apr 5, 2011 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

GOTO Considered Harmful was a letter to the editor written by Edsger Djikstra, talking about how the “GOTO” construct in computer programming would result in brittle, difficult to troubleshoot code.

It sparked an ‘editorial war’ over the next several issues of the publication, creating such wonderful entries as “GOTO Considered Harmful Considered Harmful.”

The best part is

nobody learned a damn thing. I mean, sure, nobody uses GOTO anymore, but as an industry we really don’t spend enough time thinking about whether or not the way things have been done is necessarily the best way to do things.

Better show:

The Wire vs. Dexter

I vote Dexter.

"Kill my boss?! Do I dare live out the American dream?" - Homer Simpson

by Sir Veza on Apr 5, 2011 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Wire by far...

doesn’t have the obvious plot failings (like a pair of Isotoners and cotton undershirt can keep you from leaving any evidence at a crime scene, or you can follow a car to the middle of nowhere without them realizing someone is following them, etc). Don’t get me wrong, I like Dexter, but it’s no where close.

http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/

by Mr. Sanchez on Apr 5, 2011 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

While I agree that The Wire owns

Dexter, IMHO, is more suspenseful and doesn’t go over-the-top like Weeds did (another good show for seasons 1-3).

I don’t think Dexter contains plot failings though, so maybe just a different view. Season 4 ending did kinda dissapoint me though.

Not so much plot failings...

I just don’t know a better way to put the huge holes it has, such as how his DNA is never found thanks to Isotoners and a green long sleeve undershirt. The bashing of that guy’s head in a swamp bar that was left open. The following a guy to the middle of nowhere without him noticing the one car that’s followed him from Miami to the middle of nowhere, etc. There’s some huge holes in reality some times.

He's careful to cover his tracks

You have to remember that he was trained — by a cop, to not get caught (Rule #1).

They never show him cleaning up after the kill so you just kind of have to assume that he does it right. PLUS, nobody knows his victims are dead. They are dumped into the ocean.

Yeah, that isn't quite right...

see the random guy at a swamp bar. Jimmy Smits, among others. His victims are often known gone/dead, and he doesn’t always have time to clean up in some of them.

And those 2-3 don't burn him?

Or Quinn doesn’t notice blood dripping on his shoe? Or I could go on, but about every episode there’s a huge “Huh?” for me. Great show, but there’s a hole per show imo.

I'm only on season 5

but I think that maybe these “holes” lead to him getting caught.

I see what you’re saying now. I think that’s what makes it exciting. To see if these little “holes” (as you call them) end up getting him caught. Maybe I’m over-analyzing it?

I'd agree if they weren't always left open ended...

and sorry if I spoiled any unwatched shows for you.

But the guy in the swamp bar was such a huge hole (in addition to the lone car followings mentioned above), to me, that was similar to the Russian/Pinewoods in Soprano’s, such a huge hole they just left with no answer. Seriously, why did they never find the Russian, and why didn’t he come back in their missing Caddy to inform his KGB buddy and start a way? Argh, Soprano’s messed it up so bad.
