…but most of you aren’t CS majors, so this is probably a meaningless reference.
"…the umps in San Francisco somehow missed Brooks Conrad’s tag at second base on a sliding Buster Posey, who could’ve been called out from a houseboat in Sausalito."
-- Tommy Craggs
GOTO Considered Harmful was a letter to the editor written by Edsger Djikstra, talking about how the “GOTO” construct in computer programming would result in brittle, difficult to troubleshoot code.
It sparked an ‘editorial war’ over the next several issues of the publication, creating such wonderful entries as “GOTO Considered Harmful Considered Harmful.”
"…the umps in San Francisco somehow missed Brooks Conrad’s tag at second base on a sliding Buster Posey, who could’ve been called out from a houseboat in Sausalito."
-- Tommy Craggs
The best part is
nobody learned a damn thing. I mean, sure, nobody uses GOTO anymore, but as an industry we really don’t spend enough time thinking about whether or not the way things have been done is necessarily the best way to do things.

Better show:
The Wire vs. Dexter
I vote Dexter.
"Kill my boss?! Do I dare live out the American dream?" - Homer Simpson
Wire by far...
doesn’t have the obvious plot failings (like a pair of Isotoners and cotton undershirt can keep you from leaving any evidence at a crime scene, or you can follow a car to the middle of nowhere without them realizing someone is following them, etc). Don’t get me wrong, I like Dexter, but it’s no where close.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
While I agree that The Wire owns
Dexter, IMHO, is more suspenseful and doesn’t go over-the-top like Weeds did (another good show for seasons 1-3).
I don’t think Dexter contains plot failings though, so maybe just a different view. Season 4 ending did kinda dissapoint me though.
"Kill my boss?! Do I dare live out the American dream?" - Homer Simpson
Ugh...
Weeds did fall apart after the third season.

Not so much plot failings...
I just don’t know a better way to put the huge holes it has, such as how his DNA is never found thanks to Isotoners and a green long sleeve undershirt. The bashing of that guy’s head in a swamp bar that was left open. The following a guy to the middle of nowhere without him noticing the one car that’s followed him from Miami to the middle of nowhere, etc. There’s some huge holes in reality some times.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
He's careful to cover his tracks
You have to remember that he was trained — by a cop, to not get caught (Rule #1).
They never show him cleaning up after the kill so you just kind of have to assume that he does it right. PLUS, nobody knows his victims are dead. They are dumped into the ocean.
"Kill my boss?! Do I dare live out the American dream?" - Homer Simpson
The man does make a point about the car following on dark, lonely roads through the Everglades and such…..WHO WOULDN’T NOTICE THAT!?
"Never doubt Derek Lowe's ability to win despite himself."
by EricGreggWasPaidOff on Apr 5, 2011 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, that isn't quite right...
see the random guy at a swamp bar. Jimmy Smits, among others. His victims are often known gone/dead, and he doesn’t always have time to clean up in some of them.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
I only remember him
not cleaning up after 2…maybe 3? I could be wrong though.
"Kill my boss?! Do I dare live out the American dream?" - Homer Simpson
And those 2-3 don't burn him?
Or Quinn doesn’t notice blood dripping on his shoe? Or I could go on, but about every episode there’s a huge “Huh?” for me. Great show, but there’s a hole per show imo.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
I'm only on season 5
but I think that maybe these “holes” lead to him getting caught.
I see what you’re saying now. I think that’s what makes it exciting. To see if these little “holes” (as you call them) end up getting him caught. Maybe I’m over-analyzing it?
"Kill my boss?! Do I dare live out the American dream?" - Homer Simpson
I'd agree if they weren't always left open ended...
and sorry if I spoiled any unwatched shows for you.
But the guy in the swamp bar was such a huge hole (in addition to the lone car followings mentioned above), to me, that was similar to the Russian/Pinewoods in Soprano’s, such a huge hole they just left with no answer. Seriously, why did they never find the Russian, and why didn’t he come back in their missing Caddy to inform his KGB buddy and start a way? Argh, Soprano’s messed it up so bad.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
Not sure if you've ruined it for me or not
Are you referencing the guy who killed his (Dexter’s mom) and Dexter ends up killing him and leaving him there for a few days before Doakes (the black guy) finds out who Dexter is?
"Kill my boss?! Do I dare live out the American dream?" - Homer Simpson
Nope
It’s I think the Season 5 opener. He’s in a bathroom of some random bar in the daytime, picks up a garden tool, and crushes some guys head. Harry appears, “that’s the first human thing I’ve seen you do since…”
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/

Yeah, totally different deal. I like H2H because its more fun to follow everyday...
but it sucks on weeks like this when my team is batting .200. It seems almost impossible that a team of above average/elite MLB players could collectively be so cold for an entire week. My pitching has been awesome, but I’m still losing almost every category despite having a 3.5 ERA and 1.14 WHIP.

Yes, but then shit like that happens.
And it does! And baserunners are too precious to risk that way.
If he hadn't come off the bag, we're a basehit away from a tie game with 1 out.
I think that’s worth risking.
"…the umps in San Francisco somehow missed Brooks Conrad’s tag at second base on a sliding Buster Posey, who could’ve been called out from a houseboat in Sausalito."

You don't play for a tie on the road.
Besides which, base hits are in short supply this evening, if you hadn’t noticed.
Which is exactly why we should try to make every one count.
If they’re so rare, what’s the point in staying on first when you’ve got a good shot at getting into scoring position?

Ha...I was furiously typing a post about how stupid it was to bring in Linebrink and almost missed...
Prado’s throw because I wasn’t paying attention. Linebrink owes Martin a couple of beers for that one.

SSS warning. But we’ve only had 1 good offensive showing so far.

On the bright side
After getting shutout for 7 innings by Chris Narveson yesterday, getting shutout by a pitcher who is actually good is almost a breath of fresh air.
I think they got too swing-happy
Let him throw a CG on just 111 pitches. And only 2 BBs. Need more baserunners.
Hanley Ramirez
needs to stop sucking.
That is all.
