The 2,500 Club: Braves Beat Nats 5-0, Bobby Reaches Milestone
Bobby Cox won his 2,500 game on Saturday afternoon. It just took him a little longer than he wanted.
Derek Lowe and the Braves bullpen was great on Saturday, and brought the Braves a much needed win to end their 4-game losing streak. Lowe continued his dominance in September and gutted out five innings, and didn't allow a runner to score. He struck out four and only walked one, and kept the Braves in the game until the offense could do it's thing.
The Braves scored first in the 3rd inning on an error. Brian McCann hit a sharp grounder at shift-shortstop Alberto Gonzalez. Gonzalez stopped the ball, but made a poor throw to 1st that got away from Adam Dunn. Lowe scored easily from from 3rd. Jason Heyward tried to score as well, but was thrown out at the plate. The offense remained relatively quiet for the next few innings, but came alive in the 6th. Derrek Lee doubled in Martin Prado from 2nd, and Alex Gonzalez delivered the big blow with a monster 3-run HR into left field to put the Braves up 5-0.
The bullpen was fantastic as usual, and Moylan, Venters, Kimbrel and Wagner all worked a scoreless inning. The 'pen struck out five and only gave up one hit, but did walk four as well.
Tomorrow's game will start at 1:35, and it'll be Brandon Beachy making his 2nd career start. Livan Hernandez (gulp.) will start for the Nats, so don't expect much offense.
Go Braves.

Lowe
has been dynamite in September. I think Tim and Lowe switched bodies. Like Freaky Friday or somethin.

Great win.
Btw. Most of us live on the east coast. 10:35 is either really early or really late!

Cox ranks fourth on baseball’s all-time managerial wins list, positioned behind Connie Mack (3,731), John McGraw (2,763) and Tony La Russa (2,631). As he heads toward retirement at the end of this season, he seems to be just a few years away from joining Mack and McGraw in Cooperstown.

It is, I love the 10:35a weekend starts. It’s the 4p weekday starts that suck for us West Coast Braves fans.
If Albert played in the AFL, they’d have to rename it the AZ/NM Fall League, based on where his homers landed.
Yeah, I'll be at least following the game while at the bar eating breakfast.
But I think one TV for the Saints game is all I’m going to get.
As of 25 Sept: New Orleans Saints 2-0, LSU football 4-0(2-0), LSU volleyball 12-0(3-0), Oregon football 4-0(1-0), Oregon volleyball 14-0(2-0)

let’s see if we can go 6-1 or, better yet, 7-0 the last games of the season. that may get us in :P

There’s absolutely no one at Petco Park, and this could potentially be a preview of a 1st round playoff game.

Crazy, right?
Although I think that matchup would mean we’d be out of the playoffs, so I’m hoping it doesn’t come to pass.

Grrr, I’ve got Yankees/Red Sox
That rivalry is kind of boring to me now. It’s all about “tradition” and blah blah blah.

The last few years
I pull for a benches clearing brawl when they play.
They’ve never been my #1 team, but I used to like the Sox, a lot. That has changed. Papelbon, Youklis and Beckett are far more than I can stomach.
Say what you will about Lowe, but he's stepped up big time when the Braves
needed it most unlike our ace.
Most definitely.
He’s got a 1.00 ERA the last 4 starts.
Was he cramping again, or was his pitch count up? He was cruising and seemed, at least to me, to be good for another inning or two.

Not necessarily?
If the winner of the West has a better record than the Reds, wouldn’t the Phils get the Reds?
For me, here’s my preferences:
Giants << Reds < Padres <<<<<< Making the playoffs and figuring it out.

Yea

Nice to finally win another one
It wasn’t the cleanest game for the Braves, especially the one inning that had the two errors after two outs to almost allow the Nats to get back. At this point, I don’t care about style points, it is a W in the record. It would be extremely sweet to give Bobby a finaly road series win tomorrow (for the record, the Braves had dropped the rubber game of the earlier two series this year at Nationals Park…after splitting the first two, both time winning the second game…here is to hope that history does NOT repeat itself again).

Tell me Minor isn’t pitching after Beachy. Actually, tell me neither of them are pitching.
Morgan: Do you think I could come into the clubhouse after the game and display my ass for both those veterans and the younger guys?
Baker: Well, Joe, you are on the payroll of the team, and you're a legend, so I suppose — holy shit!

It feels so good to win again. Tied up for the wild card – hopefully we can get ahead tomorrow. One week left!
one other thing I will say about the game
they looked like a team that wants to be in the playoffs. not sure what it was, but I just saw something in the way they played today’s game that seemed like they finally realized they had to play better to make the playoffs.
