Open Thread 9/1: Braves vs. Mets, Freddie Freeman Debuts

New York Mets at Atlanta Braves, Sep 1, 2010 7:10 PM EDT

Tommy Hanson takes the hill against the Mets tonight. They could take a 3-0 lead in the series with a good performance from "Big Red."

Freddie Freeman is making his somewhat long awaited Major League debut tonight against the Mets and Mike Pelfrey. The 20-year-old first basemen is the International League's Rookie of the Year and is in contention for the Minor League Player of the Year, so you can see why Bobby Cox is eager to see what he has in Freeman. Pelfrey has been very effective in his past four starts and Tommy Hanson has been anything but in his last two outings, so hopefully the Braves bats can keep it going and hit Pelfrey. They scored nine runs in the first two games and both starters for the Mets were left-handed, which is absolutely great to see. Alex Gonzalez is on the bench tonight and Omar Infante is moving over to shortstop, allowing Brooks Conrad to get the starting nod at second base. Personally, I think I would rather Prado at second and Conrad at third, but it is not too big of a deal.

Dissappointed I won't be there

I’ve seen both Hanson and Heyward’s debut in person… couldn’t make it for Minor or Freeman :(

Oh well, go FREDDIE!

Score prediction..wild one here.

13-5. Hinske and Freeman go back to back and then Freeman tacks on another in his next AB.

The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb

So I had this great idea for a drawing...

…then I got bored with it and gave up. It’s supposed to be a split-screen with Medlen watching the game on TV, calling Hanson (on the mound) to give him pointers during a game. Ross, who’s a little tired of all these trips to the mound, is irritated at Medlen.

I’m not satisfied with Medlen or Hanson, but I had some fun sketching Ross. I’ll probably do more with him in the near future. You get the unfinished right-side of the split screen, featuring an exasperated Ross.

Good luck tonight.

I hate the Phillies so much...

by frozendesert on Sep 1, 2010 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Heh. The “gig” continues. We’re beginning to turn our weary eyes to the October fund drive. I’m going to be doing a lot of traveling to report on Corridor X and the role of the petroleum industry on Alabama’s Gulf coast. On a lighter note, I just finished a piece on the rollout of Rawlings’ new batting helmets at the minor league level.

I picked the wrong day to quit sniffing Matt Cain.

by TheLetter2 on Sep 1, 2010 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting...

No offense meant on the ‘gig’ thing. What is Corridor X (I suppose I could google it). I can’t listen to the broadcast right now (at the library), but what’s your take on them?

I hate the Phillies so much...

by frozendesert on Sep 1, 2010 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Corridor X is part of a transportation network designated by the federal government back in the ‘60s to encourage economic development in Appalachian states. When it’s finished, it will link Birmingham to Memphis. The Alabama portion has been under construction off-and-on for 30 years, and is now just a year or so from completion. So I’m headed that way to see if the promised economic boon has materialized.

My take on the new helmets? Yes, absolutely. But I’m not a baseball player; I’m not the guy the makers are trying to convince. The minor leaguers I spoke with were satisfied with the gear, but didn’t think they would carry the idea with them if they get called up to the majors. The trainer I interviewed is a staunch advocate.

I picked the wrong day to quit sniffing Matt Cain.

by TheLetter2 on Sep 1, 2010 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Since the ‘60s? Wow. I’ve actually never been to Alabama; is it actually going to serve a useful purpose, or is it just a public works project? On the helmets, I was talking earlier last week with a respiratory health specialist, who does lab research regarding neuron interaction from the brainstem to the muscles of breathing, who is also a baseball fan. He absolutely loves them and loves the progress the game is making in this regard compared to sports like football. I understand the allure of fashion in the MLB, but if I was there, I definitely opt for the safer option.

I hate the Phillies so much...

by frozendesert on Sep 1, 2010 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, that’s the question I’ll try to answer. I actually drove Corridor X about two years ago, and it has shortened the trip from Birmingham to Memphis. It appears to be a heavily-used route for commerce. I’ll focus on the towns through which it passes. Are they successful? Did the (putative) interstate help? I’ll try to find out.

I picked the wrong day to quit sniffing Matt Cain.

Question

I’ve seen Heyward hit a ton of rockets right up the middle (4-irons as Chip says), but has he ever got one up a little bit and hit it over the fence in dead center? I feel like a few of his shots might’ve gone 450+ if they were elevated.

See now I'm pissed about Matt Young not getting a call up

Frank Wren said that McLouth was on the Post Season roster is because of his defense and speed that he brings off the bench. Sounds like Matt Young IMO.

by drumzalicious on Sep 1, 2010 7:56 PM EDT reply actions

McLouth won't be on the post season roster with...

Ankiel, Diaz, Melky, Glaus, Conrad, Ross and Hinske.

by Mr. Sanchez on Sep 1, 2010 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Wren

said yesterday that he already was on it.

by drumzalicious on Sep 1, 2010 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Then he was misquoted...

you don’t submit a post season roster BEFORE the post season. And where would he fit? We’ve got no more than 14 spots for position players.
McCann, Ross (2)
Lee, Glaus, Infante, Conrad, Prado, Gonzalez (6)
Heyward, Melky, Hinske, Ankiel, Diaz (5)
So unless McLouth beats out Hinske or Ankiel, it’s between him and Hernandez. Hernandez would be more beneficial defensively since we’d already have Ankiel.

by Mr. Sanchez on Sep 1, 2010 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

He was on the 25 man roster on 8/31 so he is eligible.

Aaron Boone just made me want to punch my TV

Said the Phillies are probably the favorites for the World Series now. Since, you know, they were being no hit the other night and finally broke out offensively for 2 games. Blaming injuries, poor bullpen appearances, ect;
Kind of sounds like they have been a bad team to me.

The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb

I’ve been hearing that they’ll take over first in a few days and Braves suck since we took over first. Phillies fans don’t see what’s in the standings.

Im tired of the pointing at injuries and blah blah blah

They havent won when they needed to and we have been more than steady since taking over first.
