Just One Of Those Days As Marlins Demolish Braves, 7-1

Did the Braves dig up a Native American burial ground on their way out of Chicago? Maybe Bobby Cox inherited the Cubs' curse when Lou Piniella retired? OK, so it's probably just garden-variety ineptitude, not some sort of mystical curse. At any rate, not much has gone right since the Braves left Chicago.

Tommy Hanson gave up 4 home runs (all solo shots, but still... not very good). The Braves' offense made Chris Volstad look like Josh Johnson for the first 7 innings. And just to make things a bit more embarrassing, the Braves' defense looked worse than my nephew's little league team at times. It was pretty much a thorough domination by the Marlins. To add wetness to injury, it even rained in the 9th inning.

The game got off to a rip-roaring start as the first two batters against Hanson--Cameron Maybin and Logan Morrison--smoked home runs to put the Braves in a hole before they even batted. The Marlins added two more in the second, one more in the third, and two more in the sixth (when Dan Uggla and Gaby Sanchez went back-to-back). All the damage was against Hanson. Just to forestall the worriers, I'm sure he's fine. He's bounced back from his other bad outings in good fashion. My only cause for concern would be if his velocity goes down significantly, which it hasn't to this point (I don't have the numbers for tonight's start, though).

The Braves got their only run on a solo homer by Jason Heyward in the 8th, which at least gave the lovely fans at Turner Field something to cheer about for a few minutes. Billy Wagner pitched the 9th for Atlanta, securing a strikeout to pass John Franco Jesse Orosco for the all-time strikeout lead among left-handed relievers, which is an arcane but still kind of cool stat.

The other bright side in all of this is that Tim Hudson shaved his beard, so we at least have a good shot at a win tomorrow. I honestly can't wait for that game to start; I'm sick of feeling like my team can't do anything right. If I wanted to feel that way, I'd have become a Mets fan.

Stat of the Game

From the fourth inning on Wednesday through the seventh inning tonight, the Braves were outscored 18-0 by the Rockies and Marlins. That's--how should I put this?--unfortunate.

My fault. I’m sorry. If I knew the team (especially Hanson) would be this offended that I wasn’t able to make it out tonight, I would have made a bigger effort to go.

Hopefully we can right the ship tomorrow. I want a six game winning streak the rest of this homestand (I’ll hopefully be going Wednesday).

Well, on the bright side… ummmm…huh, yeah, I got nothing.

Well, my 6 year old had his first practice tonight for his fall baseball league. Looks like he’ll be playing SS(because he can actually make the throws) or 1B(because he can catch) and batting 3rd. Sorry, that’s the best I can come up with.

DLee hit a ball really hard. Martinez looked good.

Wags ended up throwing that ball into the stands a few pitches later, didn’t he?

Heyward has been on absolute fire the past aix games, raising his OPS from .797 to .849 in that short span…a featbhard to do when you’ve already are at over 400 plate appearances for the year.

I hope Heyward keeps the hot bat the rest of the way and reclaims the lead in the NL rookie of year race.

If they win their division & have the best record in the league, then they are good. If not the rest of the league must be pretty bad too.

They just smash on the weak teams and don’t do much against the good ones.

In all honesty

I have my doubts about them. Having experienced ‘91, I usually sort of resent people assuming a young team can’t come out of nowhere (I tried to tell people to stop confidently predicting doom for the ‘08 Rays), but that Padres team seems a little like they may be blowing a big bubble that will burst sometime later. Maybe not until October, but I think it’s going to pop.

I watch them quite a bit

since they’re on in primetime since I’m on the West Coast, and I’m never really impressed. It always seems like their bullpen picks up a lot of their good stats in the blowout wins and losses. Their starting pitching is good, but there’s no way guys like Garland and LeBlanc can maintain this over the next few seasons, if not the final month and post season.

The offense is stacked full of no-names, and quite a few of them are over-performing. Gonzalez is an animal, but if you shut him down, they’re dead. We shut AGon down in Atlanta, and we were an out away from a pretty impressive sweep.

Just wondering

Now, would KK be better than a depressed Hanson?…Big Red is looking like his bubble is a little deflated….Bobby Cox needs to have some “personal me” time with his sophmore player?
I still believe that Prado needs to return to 2nd……Infante again missed a ball hit right at him…the TV guys said it was a bad hop…hmmmm, I have seen Prado catch those…on the other hand at 3rd Prado missed a few in Colorado but he has just started there for a few games…..Help Obi One Konobe (Bobby C) you are our only hope!

it just felt right and the chance to go to the postseason is hard to pass up. I’ve always respected their orginization… and Bobby…I’m excited. I’m looking forward to it...Derrek Lee (at press conference sayiing he had been traded to the Braves)

On walkoff balks that consisted of the pitcher dropping the damn thing.

Naturally, Rocker was the guy who lost a game for us that way.

This game was probably my fault

Braves have only lost 18 home games, but I’ve been to four games and they’ve lost three of those. They were also losing April 20th when I was at the game, but I left after the 8th inning, flustered at the complete lack of offense. They went on to score 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth and walk off in the tenth on a Nate McLouth homer. The Braves have essentially failed every time I’ve been at the ballpark this year

I’ll refrain from buying anymore tickets this year.

I thought the Braves being such a veteran laden team would easily snap out of it last night coming home with an off day. Maybe Hanson isn’t there yet to pick up the team in a pressure situation, but it doesn’t matter when the squads only going to give you one run. The Phils bounce back from their mind-boggling sweep and pull a tough one out, and now come out of this momentum-less week with the edge. The Braves have two very tough pitchers to face this weekend, but had better pull their head out of their ass fast or will find themselves in second place before they can blink twice. And for Gods sakes, even though I didn’t see the game, there are more comments in the recap about the poor defense. This is what’s going to end up being the demise of this team. I’m trying to stay optimistic, but the poor nature of this home loss is deflating. Lets Go Braves – pull your head out!
