Braves Battle Back in Colorado, But Fall 5-4
That was a pretty frustrating game with an absolutely terrible call by the 2nd base umpire in the 8th inning, so we'll just get right to the recap.
Tim Hudson wasn't great for his 2nd start in a row, but he still managed to fight through six innings of four run baseball. He gave up seven hits on the night and only walked one, but it seemed like the Rockies had runners in scoring position against him all night. And unlike the Braves on Monday, they took advantage of situations where they could score. Jason Hammel pitched for the Rockies and had Braves hitters off balance for a majority of the night. He did allowed nine hits in 6.1IP, but the Braves failed to capitalize on his mistakes. He struck out six and didn't walk any either.
The Rockies scored first tonight courtesy of a Carlos Gonzalez double into the gap. Jason Heyward just barely missed the ball with his glove, and the speedy Dexter Fowler scored from 1st. Most know this already, but I think we all saw tonight how good of a player CarGo really is.
Ian Stewart benefitted from "The Coors Effect" and hit a moonshot HR to center field that kept on carrying and carrying. It was on an elevated fastball from Hudson, and he didn't miss. The Rockies led 3-0 after four innings.
The Braves came right back in the next frame. Martin Prado tomahawked a ball at the letters over the center field wall to finally put the Braves on the board. The homer is the first since Martin's return from the disabled list, and it drove in Jason Heyward who had another three hits on the night.
The Rockies scored once again in the sixth, and this time it was courtesy of Todd Helton. Helton absolutely owns Huddy at Coors Field and he ended up with four hits on the night. He drove in Troy Tulowitzki with a single up the middle to make it 4-2 after six innings.
Rick Ankiel caught a hold of an elevated fastball in the 7th inning and recorded his first HR of the year with the Atlanta Braves. The Braves then came up in the 8th inning and tied it up on a huge two out, RBI-double in the 8th inning. Diory Hernandez had a shot to score from 1st, but Carlos Gonzalez made a nice play on the ball and got it in quickly. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Rick Ankiel battled with Rafael Betancourt, but ended up striking out on a ball above his head. The Braves still managed to tie the game though, and it was 4-4 heading into the 8th.
CarGo came up big once again and served a single to right field off of Jonny Venters to lead off the 8th. Gonzalez then attempted to steal 2nd and it turned out to be a huge call in the Rockies favor. Brian McCann gunned the ball down to Alex Gonzalez and he clearly tagged Carlos out before he reached the bag. The umpire called him safe. The fans knew it, the announcers knew it, and I think even Gonzalez knew it: he was out. Clearly out. But the umpire blew the call, and after a Tulowitzki walk, Todd Helton drove him in. Thanks ump. Go screw yourself.
The Braves came up in the 9th against Rox closer Houston Street. Melky Cabrera had a pathetic pinch-hit AB as he does 98% of the time and struck out on four pitches. Omar Infante grounded out weakly on the first pitch for the 2nd out. Jason Heyward, who already had three hits on the night, came up as the final hope to find that the strikezone had magically widened two feet as he came to the plate. Ball one was called a strike, as was ball two. Heyward took what should've been ball three, and then struck out swinging on an elevated slider.
Braves lose 5-4. Very frustrating game.
The Phillies did lose on Monday, so our lead is still 2.5 games.
It'll be Derek Lowe against Jorge De La Rosa tomorrow night. Oh boy. First pitch is at 8:40EST.

Here we go again...
Blaming the umpiring. Yes, it was an unfortunate call but:
1) CarGon’s hit was on 0-2
2) Venters had Helton 0-2 and couldn’t put him away, even with him flinching at a curveball after he nearly sheared off his dome.
3) Another sub par night with RISP: 1 for 5. (Ankiel big fail with 2nd and 3rd in 8th).
I just don’t like the concept of blaming the umpiring. Venters put himself in the situation not making good out pitches with guys on the ropes.
Alos, watch the Phils game highlights and thank the umpire for not calling Bourn out on the bunt single, which enabled the Stros to come back from a 2-1 deficit to win. It all evens out.
He made a fantastic pitch. Here’s what McCann said about it: http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=300823127

Yeah, same for Helton. Basically admitted he was swatting flies trying to find a hole. If Venters hooks that curve the pitch after the near decapitation where he wanted Helton would have been rung up. Thats where he had him and missed.
by CharlotteChop on Aug 24, 2010 7:47 AM EDT up reply actions
And by no means am I “blaming” Venters. Dude has been stone cold all season.
by CharlotteChop on Aug 24, 2010 7:50 AM EDT up reply actions
Totally agree
While that call was horrendous, it is not why we lost. We lost because of the poor RISP. DLee is also in a cold streak, but I have a feeling he will come around sooner or later. Sometimes this seems to happen to guys after a trade.
We have benefited from calls in other games, so I’m not going to whine about this one. I’m sure we’ll get some calls our way.
People saying “______ is not why we lost” is a pet peeve of mine. If Gonazales gets called out there it would have been 4-4 going to the ninth, a completely different scenario than 5-4. There is a ~50% chance that the blown call did change who won the game. I know it’s normally taboo to claim that officiating is the reason for a loss but sometimes it is the case.
Just because we had opportunities to score more than 4 runs doesn’t make the blown call a moot point.
Correct
But it doesn’t make it the deciding point. If Hudson doesn’t let Helton have his way with him, if J-Hey doesn’t GIDP, if Melky doesn’t strike out like a girl….etc. etc. While the call pissed me off as much as anyone else, that happens every single game. We shouldn’t let moments like that control the game.
If you watch the replay, the divot is after the tag attempt. It was a good call, and if it wasn’t against the PHABBBBBBBBBULOUS Phillies, it wouldn’t even be talked about.
But yes. The Braves has also benefited by calls from the umps.
I don't know shit about baseball.
To the degree that I'm "blaming the umpire"
I’m angry only about Rapuano’s blown call at second on the steal, a runner who scored the eventual winning run. A guy in scoring position with no outs in the bottom of the 8th inning is a rather more dangerous situation that no one on and one out in the same inning. No amount of pointing at other failings of the Braves, however true and accurate, will change the fact that the wrong call in that spot was absolutely crucial to the Rockies scoring that run. Rapuano was out of position (although he got a superb look at Gonzalez’s ass) and he made the wrong call.
As for the plate, just FYI, I wasn’t referring to anything involving Helton. I was alluding to the 38 inch wide plate that Street got against Heyward for the first two pitches he threw.
"We haven't had any irony here since about, uh, '83, when I was the only practitioner of it. And I stopped because I was tired of being stared at."
On the bright side
If we keep on winning when the Phils win and losing when the Phils lose, we’re guaranteed to win the division.
Kawakami - 1, Halladay - 0
I choose to blame Chip Carey.
It seems like every time he says, “Venters hasn’t allowed a run in X innings,” Venters promptly gives up a run.
The man’s a jinx, I tell you.
Chip has been in rare form. It seems like every time we score a run, the guy is trying to channel Skip after the Sid Bream slide.
Chip is hilarious. Last night he exclaimed McCann hit “right into the teeth of the shift” as he grounded out to the third baseman who was playing shortstop. I don’t know why, but I thought it was funny and also, the exact opposite of hitting into the teeth of the shift.
I think it’s really funny when Chip says something and Joe is so dumbfounded he has nothing but silence to offer. That happens three/ four times each game.
by CharlotteChop on Aug 24, 2010 8:13 AM EDT up reply actions
I enjoy Chip, enough. As opposed to others. He really does have that broadcast voice, as opposed to some others that just try very hard to do their impersonation of one (Ernie). He sounds more like that raspy dude that’s on Curb Your Enthusiasm, every now and then.
Joe and Boog would have been having a ball this year. Those 2 guys had a freaking routine. Shamelessly plugging that Joe and Boog facebook page, daily, and then bailing. Classic.

Yes, Chip does make it exciting. It’s easier to overlook when there is true emotion involved and I love his genetically given “homerism”- I think being a broadcaster of the home team should come with some homerism. Here in Charlotte we also get the majority of Reds games and I notice that they have an announcer that is not only the most dull broadcaster on the planet, he gives the Reds no love as the home team announcer. Paul Keels I think is his name.
by CharlotteChop on Aug 24, 2010 8:37 AM EDT up reply actions
I’ve gotten used to Chip’s announcing style, and Chip scored major points with me the other day when he sang, “Root root root for the Bravos” during the 7th inning stretch at Wrigley. That was right up there with McLouth’s walk-off with no celebration, and Joe’s “I’ve been to 2 rodeos and 3 goat ropings…” call, as one of the funniest moments of the season.
I still think the dude needs to switch to decaf, though.

meh. I choose to blame the ump.
Not only did he miss that huge call……..he never even saw it. It seems that if an ump finds himself in a position where can’t see a call, he should indicate to check the replay. ….He just gave dude stealing 2nd the benefit of the doubt, even though he was out by a foot.
Not to take anything away from Helton, because he went on one of his usual tears against the Braves, but the game would have stayed tied going into the 9th, and we probably would have won another one.
Lose the beard, Huddy.

Frustrating
That is all.
"A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul." - George Bernard Shaw
We need to score runs early. It´s been a long time since the last time had the early lead
I´m starting to frustrate with Lee. Fastball down in to the middle and he can´t hit it.
That fastball was the same ball that Gonzalez hit later into 2B
Glass half full
While the loss was frustrating…coming back when we were down 3-0 early shows a lot of heart. It would have been easy to pack it in but this team night in night out shows a lot of heart. Umps miss the calls and that’s just baseball. Let’s win the next two and come home with a 4-2 road trip!
at least every time we lose the phillies lose
its kind of amazing how every time we lose they lose …..they are still alittle too close for my comfort but i am by no means pressing the panic button yet especially with heyward possibly heating up.. we’ll take the next two and take the series …..go braves!
Well, I hope Helton got that all out of his system at once.
Frustrating game and loss for sure.
The main complaint with the umps I have is lack of consistency. If the K zone is 6 inches either side, make it that all night please not just the bottom of the 9th inning. And yes, I agree with the poster above that said the play at 2nd should have asked for a check on the play. Egos prevail as always.
I’m beginning to think the only time the we will win the same night the Phillies lose is only if we play them ourselves. It would have been nice to have gained a game there, but no loss of ground is good.

Exactly why a manager should be allowed (AT LEAST) 1 challenge a game.
Correct the blown calls on the bases (Tigers fans…..?) I know there are always other factors involved in a loss, but umpire’s missing calls on the bases shouldn’t be one of them.

Doubt Bobby would have made it that far with his challenge. He seems like the challenge early type manager.
There wasn’t any need for it up until that point though. When you need it, you know it. And that play at 2nd was it.

Disappointing...
As for the main blown call, that was frustrating. CarGo got a horrible jump and it was pretty easy to tell even from my RF seats that he was going to be out as soon as McCann broke his stance to collect the pitch and throw. Don’t know why the ump chose to position himself where he did, but everyone in the building knew that was a blown call.
Otherwise, pretty fun game. Boy does that ball carry, as evidenced on the CarGo double that Heyward would have caught in any other stadium and the Stewart/Prado homers to center…someone asked earlier in the season about CarGo’s split stats, and tonight proved the theory. He hits the ball hard, and it carries a country mile. I was hoping Heyward would elevate one a bit so I could see a second/upper deck shot, but it didn’t happen.
Ah well, we’ll get ’em tonite.

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
Bleh.
Bleh bleh…
Let’s win tonight. Go Braves!
Bleh.

There's a pretty easy solution
Don’t place the ump in a position of deciding the game. If we had capitalized on just one of the RISP outs, that blown call’s worst damage is to send the game to extra innings.
Blaming the ump for a bad call is fine, but our offense chose to lie down once again and leave plenty of win opportunities stranded.
Heyward is getting hot…watch out

"That’s not important right now," Infante said of the batting-title possibility. "I want to stay healthy and be part of making the playoffs, do my best to help this team get in the playoffs. At the end of the season, after we clinch, I’ll find out who’s going to have the batting title."

Oh, and Bobby's got to let Melky get more playing time than Hinske.
Melky may not be the best pinch hitter on the bench, but let him get a couple at bats and Melky will have a couple of hits, as opposed to Hinske going 0 for.

Here's the good news
If you check out the Baseball Prospectus playoff odds report (which I do daily, sadly), while our chances of making the playoffs dropped by 0.43%, our odds of winning the division actually increased (to 81.95%).
The even BETTER news is that in one day, Philadelphia’s chances of making the playoffs dropped by 8.59%, now down to 43.8%.
While these odds may be somewhat meaningless, it made me smile a little that one loss can affect the Phillies so much more than it affects us.
The good news is that the Phillies lost, too.
Interesting stats, tho.

Interesting
But all that needs to happen is the Braves to lose 3 games in a row and the Phillies to win 3 games in a row. I don’t think that will actually happen, Braves have too much good pitching and Phillies have a rough stretch ahead of them, but I would not get very comfy at all.
I agree. These stats are a little BS, especially when you see how quickly they fluctuate.
I have been worried about this Colorado series for the past couple of weeks. We always seem to do poorly there (unless my memory is wrong), so I wouldn’t be completely surprised if we were only a game up going into the weekend. Then again, that’s when we go home and the Phillies go to SD to play the Dads.
The Braves at Coors Field since 2004:
2009: 2-2
2008: 1-3
2007: 2-1
2006: 1-3
2005: 1-2
2004: 1-2
The birth of Jason Heyward was God’s punishment for the sins of the people in New York and Philly.
“These stats are a little BS, especially when you see how quickly they fluctuate.”
Fluctuation is normal, imagine if I was racing you in a coin flipping contest, first one to 2 wins. You pick heads and I pick tails. Before we start it is predicted that we both have a 50% chance to be the first to 2 and win. After the first toss, if it is heads you suddenly have a 75% chance to win. Does this mean that initial prediction that we both had a 50% chance was wrong?
These predictions obviously suffer from a little bit of error due to the complexities of predicting baseball outcomes, but overall they are a great guideline to the current odds given what we know.
I don’t think that will happen either. Only twice this year have the Braves lost as many as three in a row. I know 2.5 games isn’t a comfortable lead, but I think this team has the ability to win when it needs to. I’m sure the lead will hold.
For the record, the Phillies have lost at least three in a row SEVEN times this year.
The birth of Jason Heyward was God’s punishment for the sins of the people in New York and Philly.
Aug 27- Sep 15 will shape the outcome of the division in a big way. 14 of 20 at home for the Braves, 13 of 19 on the road for the Phils. Interestingly enough though, the Braves and Phillies do not play concurrent home games the rest of the season. Braves have 20 at home, Phils 19. Very similar schedules, but to the Braves advantage Phillies have to go to the West Coast for 6 + a game at Colorado on the way back.

But this is the second time in a row that McCann has sat the nite game before a day game. Usually starting catchers do the opposite, if I’m not mistaken…however, McCann was playing really well during day games earlier in the season. I’m surprised that he changed his look in the midst of such a great run.
Anyhow, while the results of yesterday’s game was frustrating, the Braves showed once again that they are not going to get discouraged when falling behind (which is always great to see). I wasn’t super convinced (even after seeing ther replay a few times) that the tag really got the runner on that pivotal 8th inning play. As much as I still resent Helton for the memory of his homer off Rocker on the last day of the season in 2000 that lead to the unreveling of the Braves (in the series that Ankiel also lost it as a pitcher) because they all the sudden lost homefield, it was a great hitting performance by him.
Nevertheless, the Braves still can win this road series with a couple of good performances (pitching matchup does appear to favor us) and the weekend with the Phillies vs. the Padres should benefit us either way (I’m almost as concerned with the Padres’ lead over the Braves in best NL record as the lead on the Phillies).
