Braves Beat Padres 4-1 Behind Diaz, Jurrjens, and Heyward

Jair Jurrjens put together another solid start and Matt Diaz hit his third home run in as many games to give the Braves the edge in the opener of a three game series vs. the N.L West leading San Diego Padres. The Braves have now won all four of Jurrjens starts since he returned from the disabled list, and he has allowed just six runs in 24.1 innings pitched over that span. With the victory, the Braves now have a .5 game lead over the Padres for the best record in the N.L.

The Padres opened up the scoring when Chris Denorfia hit a solo shot in the second inning, but Jurrjens kept their bats at bay from that point on. Jair ended up with a line of 7 IP 5 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K. The strikeouts are great to see as Jurrjens isn't known to be a strikeout pitcher. Lefties Jonny Venters and Billy Wagner finished off the game by throwing an inning each and striking out a batter a piece while allowing no base runners. Wagner earned his 22nd save and Venters earned his 11th hold. For the 63 of you that picked Jurrjens to give up the first homer, you were right. Fortunately, he did so and the Braves still came out on top.

Offensively, the Braves were struggling until Matt Diaz hit his fourth home run of the season in the fourth inning. Diaz put one over the left field fence after a Troy Glaus walk. Matty also added another RBI in the seventh inning as he singled off of Ryan Webb to make it a three run game. Jason Heyward went 3-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. Heyward killed the ball all night, and if he is able to produce like he did before his injury, the rest of the N.L. is in serious trouble. I predicted that Jason would have a good series in the preview and he is definitely on to a good start. Martin Prado added his 26th double of the season and also walked and scored a run.

More after the jump.

Star-divide

Padres starter Wade LeBlanc pitched well, allowing just two runs over six innings, but he made a mistake to the one Braves batter lefties cannot make a mistake to in Diaz. LeBlanc pitched better than I expected. The Braves are still struggling against left-handers, which is not a good sign, but thankfully the Braves can win these low scoring games due to having one of the top pitching staffs in baseball.

Up next is Jon Garland (9-6, 3.45 ERA, 4.41 FIP, 4.44 xFIP) vs. Tommy Hanson (8-6, 4.19 ERA, 3.34 FIP, 4.01 xFIP). Garland allows a good amount of line drives and the Braves generally hit righties pretty well. If Hanson throws a decent game, the Braves have a great chance to take the series tomorrow night.

So true. I love it. With Diaz’s hot bat you don’t really want to face him right now. Although he’s still better than Big Mac.

Great win.

I love what Heyward and Diaz have been doing lately. JJ seems to be back to his 2009 form, too, which is awesome. Now we can just take tomorrow’s game and win the series.

Getting guys healthy

If you’re a big believer in “getting our guys back from the DL is like making a big trade without giving up anything,” then this was the game for you. None of the guys that were instrumental in winning this game were playing for us a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully McLouth figured things out while he was away also.

The only thing that soured me about this game

was DOB saying we had 2 assistants in Florida and most likely have a deal for Cody Ross in place if McLouth doesn’t come back strong.

other than that it’s good to see Heyward bgetting some hits and Diaz back to his old lefty bashing self.

I read this today concerning the players we are looking at:
. Some of the players they have evaluated include Kansas City’s David DeJesus, Florida’s Cody Ross, Milwaukee’s Corey Hart and Washington’s Josh Willingham.

It goes on to say that all other than Cody Ross, would take very much in return. Do we really want to give up the Farm to get one of the more valued players? I don’t….

As someone explained

Last night in one of the other posts, if you take out the April statistics, Melky is actually hitting okay. Not great, but relatively okay since then.

Anyways, I feel like I’d rather have him than Cody Ross, even though Ross has some decent numbers this year.

Great game

I love seeing Matt Diaz when he’s hot. Gotta be my favorite player. Heyward bouncing back is great news too, if he can regain April/May form, then watch out!

Only concern was seeing Jurrjens give up another long ball. Good thing about that was that he buckled down and pitched solid the rest of the game, albiet some great plays from the defense. I’m talking about Melky’s throw in the first, McCann’s two strikes to Prado to stop two potential stolen bases, and Gonzalez’s great stop/turn in the 8th inning that was this close to being an incredible double play.

Oh, and what is the deal with Blanco? I thought he was being sent down for McLouth? I didn’t have the volume up for the whole game, so not sure if I missed it when they talked about it, but I was surprised to see Blanco come in the 8th inning. Anybody know about this?

Jason Heyward...great guy

by KINGSLYTUT on Jul 20, 2010 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

We’ve really only had one full season from Happ, and he went 12-4 with a 2.9 ERA and 1.2 WHIP. This year he made two starts getting one win while posting a 0 ERA before he got hurt.

All I’m saying is the guy has some real potential. And age doesn’t mean anything, Prado is 26 and having the best year of his career.

by sag969 on Jul 20, 2010 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions

you didnt use a single stat that means anything…with the philly offense most pitchers would have a winning record, with the phillies defense most pitchers woud lhave a low ERA, and neither of those are good indicatros of skill…WHIP is semi-useful

you are crazy if you think Happ has the same potential as Hanson…Happ has the potential of a 2 if everything goes perfectly as planned, more likely he is a solid 3 or a good 4…

he could be one of those guys that completely defies all odds and ends up an ace, but those guys are pretty rare.

Hanson on the other hand has everythign you want in an ace and at worst is a nbr 3.

After this year, Wells is owed $86M for 4 years.

After this year, Howard is owed $145M for 6 years plus a buyout.

Wells is probably the better all-around player right now (if this year is for real and not a fluke). At worst, it’s about even. Which contract would you rather have?

You’re right. The fact that Ryan Howard commanded so money and Adam Dunn commands nothing compared to it is outlandish. They are literally the same player offensively and defensively, yet Howard does subway commercials so he is more valuable. In a sense, he is because people buy more jerseys so he does bring in more money, but from a baseball perspective he is not worth that much, especially when you consider how old he’ll be at the end of the contract.

Agreed.

Howard is better (but not good) defensively, but then Dunn has been better with the bat this year.

Really, both of them are American league players, and both deserve to make around $12-15M per year. Instead, Dunn makes $10M and Howard makes $20-25M. Oh, and I wouldn’t sign either guy to a more than 3 year deal.

yea he got lucky to find laroche on sale in return for kotchman (good trade) but the initial trade was awful…even looked like it would suck at the time…

i think where wren really struggles is PR…he treated a braves legend (glavine) like shit…i don’t disagree with his move to call up hanson instead, but he didn’t have to lead glavine on like he was going to pitch and then at the last second pull the plug…

Who knows

What really happened with Glavine. From our view it looked really bad, but it might have just been that the Braves were wary of him the whole time and realized (albeit at the last minute) that he was going to hurt them.

I think it was handled poorly, but I wouldn’t lay that all at Wren’s feet. I’m sure John Schuerholz and Cox had plenty of input as well.

that was the best offer at the time…Kotchman was cheap and had potential and was already a good ML player (he looked to be at worst a Mark Grace type)….

there was never any reports of anotehr deal and there just werent that many teams looking for a 1B…

Wren knew he wanted to compete the following year and couldnt take the risk we would get the draft picks

Well, at the risk of drawing this out...

That was an unquestioned STEAL for the Angels. If that’s the best possible deal, you laugh, hang up the phone, and collect the picks at the end of the year. There was absolutely NO risk of him accepting arb. With his numbers, 1b vacancies in Boston and New York, and borA$$ as his agent, there was no way he was gonna stay here for a year for a maximum 1.2x his 08 contract instead of cashing in big time.

Even if that was the best available deal for a 1b, which I suspect it was, if you’re selling him you’re punting 08 anyway, we could have let someone like Prado finish that year at first and sold Tex for the best overall available player, regardless of position.

it doesnt matter what the record is…its what makes most sense going forward…a majority of the time he spent int he 2 spot he had a hurt thumb…the dropoff between him and the next best 2 hitter is huge….whereas we have capable players to bat 6th…

Heyward needs to get as many ABs as possible and has the skills that make a good 2 hitter

I know I’m just saying it doesnt matter what his number or the team’s nbrs suggest, bc there is a variable that cant be accounted for goign forward (how much impact the thumb injury has on his production)…so we need to go with a decision based on his skills…and that is that his skill dictate 2 hitter right now (obviously 3 hitter going forward)

Im cutting off the argument that we do better when he bats 6th before it can be brought up, hopeuflly

that could work, but Heyward is the better hitter and generally the better hitter bats 3, althought in this case, Freeman’s lack of power (or preceived lack of power, specifically 30HR power) it might make more sense to bat Heyward 4….

But Heyward just seems like a 3 hitter to me…either way we are in tourble…with our three best power hitters all being LH (McCann, Freeman, and Heyward)

If Chipper retires we can afford Werth.

Twitter: @Ben_Duronio

by BenDuronio on Jul 21, 2010 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions

That depends

If we use Chipper money on Werth, what’s left to find a 3B? Maybe if a SS if Gonfailez continues to not wow everybody the rest of the year and his option is passed up? A closer?

I’m certainly not saying we CAN’T get Werth, and at the end of the day a Braves team with Werth in the OF is an excellent team, I’m just saying with Glausosaur leaving (presumably, but not automatically, being replaced by Freeman), Chipper and Wagner retiring, and potentially having to re-fill the hole we just dug ourselves at short, there’s no guarantee that a metric crap-ton of money is unloaded in the outfield. Winning the whole thing this year in order to convince Liberty to open the pocketbook a little wider would certainly help… ;)

by J-Freak on Jul 21, 2010 6:58 AM EDT up reply actions

We’re not going to replace Gonzalez at shortstop, I’m about 99% sure they’re going to pickup the option as FW said the option was one of the reasons they pulled the trigger.

Trading Lowe and even eating some of his contract, maybe even half, would clear some extra money as well.

Twitter: @Ben_Duronio

by BenDuronio on Jul 21, 2010 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Gonzalez's option

is so cheap, he’s a steal even if he slumps all year. $2.5M for a defense-only shortstop is EASILY worth it. That is a fantastic contract.

I just don’t know if we can afford Werth AND a good-hitting 3B to replace Chipper.

"Yeah, and I have an enchanted jock strap." -- Karl Karlson

by Jacob Peterson on Jul 21, 2010 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, If Werth and Freeman together were to roughly replace what we’ve gotten out of Chipper and Glaus combined, we don’t have to go for a top-tier 3B, which is good because the only one really worth going after is Beltre, which means a bidding war, or overpaying for A-Ram. We might be able to snag a guy like Cantu or Peralta for a decent price though, and either one would be OK hitting low in the order with some combo of Prado, J-Hey, McCann, Freeman, Werth, and probably our CF batting 1-6.

by J-Freak on Jul 21, 2010 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Cantu is horrendus in the field….and gives back everything he gains with his offense….unless he is playing 1B he just isn’t worth it

and why overpay for Werth when we can overpay for Beltre…he is soo much cooler

"No. Lonely people mixing with one another? Breeding? Creating an even lonelier generation? You're not even allowing natural selection do its work. Pssh. You're like the guy who invented the seat belt."

Dwight Schrute

by Swo12bv on Jul 22, 2010 1:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I didn’t look up the UZR numbers before I said that. A-Ram and Beltre are the top two, then there’s a steep drop-off to Juan Uribe, then another steep drop-off to everyone else. Peralta is fourth, because his offensive numbers are at least serviceable and he’s only slightly below average defensively. After those 4, you’re really getting down to dregs. It’s a very thin free agent market this year, so we better bet on either overpaying Werth to take over center or overpaying Beltre to take over third, and finding a way to flip a pitching prospect to someone to fill the other hole. There’s just no depth on the FA market to fix all the holes we’re going to have.

by J-Freak on Jul 22, 2010 1:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Eh

I like Werth as much as the next guy, but he’s going to cost a pretty penny next year. Plus our biggest future hole (I think) is CF and I don’t think Werth can play there.

by sag969 on Jul 20, 2010 11:52 PM EDT up reply actions

We’ll have the money to sign him, and will need to sign a power hitter if Chipper leaves.

Werth Can Play CF

He is their centerfielder when Victorino is out. 18.4 UZR/150, given it was in limited playing time. He is more valuable than Bay due to his ability to play centerfield.

Hot damn

I knew he was an excellent defender over there in right, I did not realize though how good he was in center. Even if he’s a quarter of that UZR/150 over a larger sample size, WE MUST CAN HAZ. He solves our need for right handed pop, a little speed, good defense, and a reliable CF all in one fell swoop. Definitely Werth (see what I did there?) the fat contract it’s going to take to lure him.

Sadly though, I have this feeling in my gut that Wren isn’t going to bother unless he can unload McLouth somewhere. Now I know what I want for Christmas this year.

all you have to do is look at the numbers and once they are park adjusted (he played in a park that severely depresses offense and HR) and then you see he is a fine offensive player and in the top half of all 3B . Then when you see he is the best defender of the position its a no brainer for me.

But maybe Im too optimistic…I loved the signing for Boston and will probably love the deal he gets this offseason (assuming he doesnt exervise his player option, which could reach 10M if he reaches the PA limit)

there is absolutely no evidence of steroids….but ok….

it’s weak to use anecdotel evidence and say “o he must have been on steroids”….back in the day tons of players would hit a bunch of HR in a year and there was no explanation for it…just bc someone does it now doesnt mean he was on the juice….

not to mention why would you only take it for one year.

the contract year thing, I cant disagree with, except to say his one of his worst seasons was 2009 which was also a contract year

Unless I’ve really got the arb rules screwed up in my own head, we’re past the point where he accumulates enough service time for the arb schedule to be affected. In other words, whether he starts for us tomorrow or Opening Day 2011, his first arb year should be exactly the same. But somebody correct me if my info is off-base.

by J-Freak on Jul 21, 2010 7:12 AM EDT up reply actions

You're right

But he would still be eligible to be a super-two, which I’m unsure if they are willing to do or not. We’ll find that out if they give him the job in ST.

One of the reasons I’d like Ross is that when we lose Glaus, we’re probably going to be getting Freeman up. Replacing Ross for McLouth would give another right-handed bat and although left-handed bats are better, having a few righties is a good thing.

Twitter: @Ben_Duronio

by BenDuronio on Jul 21, 2010 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

With you on the Ross-over-McLouth thing. The only thing the Super Two does at this point is add one additional arb year to the end of his service time though, it wouldn’t advance his first one.

IMHO.. If they trade werth they just lost offense.. Who’s to say utley will come back good? Also trading an offensive piece away and gaining a better starter doesn’t sound like a winning deal to me… The only way i could see this as a win.. Is if they kept werth and made the move for oswalt and they may not be financially able to do so. Jmho.

BREAKING NEWS

AP – In a shocking trade, the Philadelphia Phillies have acquired Roy Oswalt from the Houston Astros in a three-way agreement that involved the Atlanta Braves. Atlanta will receive Roy Halladay in the deal, and will ship three "mid-level prospects to be named later " to Houston. When asked why he gave up Halladay, Ruben Amaro, Jr. said to reporters, “Oswalt is an ace. We really need a front-of-the-rotation starter here. Plus, two Roys on the club is one too many.”

…perhaps I’m too cynical, but I don’t think I’d be surprised if Philly actually did that.

Great!

Halladay can take KK’s spot in the pen, and KK can join the rotation again.

Great game tonight!

I watched the game on my laptop while relaxing on the beach. I love modern technology.
What about MattyD, he is playing some sweet baseball.
Keep the wins coming Bravos!

I’m missing being in the OT’s.They are always Fun when we are playing good baseball :)
Our man MattyD is playing great baseball. I’m thrilled to see him back to playing like he did last season! The perfect time to get the bat going for the second half.

I’ll be heading back home Sunday after watching the Braves Fry the Fish!
Cheers to our Red Hot Bravos!

So I'm in Europe for two weeks...

But I can’t say how happy I am we’ve started to measure our team as lead in the NL instead of NL East

Go USA, Braves, BU Terriers, Irish, Caps, Colts, Hoyas, NU Cats, Wizards, DC United, Washington Freedom

Best Comment of the night on MLB Network

Dan Plesac said Heyward hits the ball as hard as Dave Winfield and sooner or later a pitcher is going to get killed from throwing him away (when he hits it right back up the box).

yesterday was like a a baseball Christmas

we’re pulling away in the NL east, the donkeys lost, and the red sux lost, all in one night

People have a week dedicated to sharks, sharks have a week dedicated to Jason Heyward, let's follow in the "footsteps" of the sharks.....
