The Braves Beat the Rays 3-1 As Tim Hudson Dazzles
Tim Hudson threw 7 masterful innings and also scored the go-ahead run as the Braves avoided losing a series for the 12th consecutive time. The Braves have now successfully tied or won every series since May 7-9, going 26-10 over that span (.722 winning percentage). Hudson allowed 8 base runners and struck out 5 but allowed just 1 run to score. He forced the Rays to hit weak grounders constantly throughout his 7 innings of work and got out of a jam very smoothly in the bottom half of his final inning. With men on first and second with 2 outs, he forced Willy Aybar to ground out to Martin Prado to end the inning and his outing. Hudson handed it over to Jonny Venters and Billy Wagner, who successfully finished the game and allowed just 1 base runner between them while striking out 2. It was Wagner's 12th save of the season, putting him just 4 away from 400 career saves.
The story of the rubber game between the top team in the AL and the top team in the NL was pitching. James Shields was very impressive as well, allowing 6 base runners, striking out 3, and allowing 3 runs over 6 innings. But as good as Shields was, Hudson was just that much better.
In the 3rd inning, Carl Crawford used his incredible speed to score the Rays first run. He walked and stole 2nd, then was running on a Carlos Pena grounder and scored on an infield single. Prado fielded the grounder to his right and almost made an amazing play to get Pena out and strand the runner, but the throw was just a bit too difficult to make in time. Crawford looked to be on his way to having a similar inning as he walked and attempted to steal 2nd in the top of the 6th but was caught by a very good throw from McCann.
Jason Heyward tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the 4th with his 11th home run of the season . At the time, it was just the Braves second hit.
Locked in a duel with Shields through five innings, Hudson got the Braves offense started with a leadoff single in the bottom of the 6th. Martin Prado then pulled a ball past the shortstop to make it 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Brooks Conrad moved them over with a sacrifice bunt, putting men on 2nd and 3rd for Jason Heyward. Shields threw a nasty changeup to strike Heyward out and subsequently intentionality walked Brian McCann. With the bases loaded and 2 men out, Troy Glaus came up and lofted a ball just out of the reach of the right fielder Ben Zobrist for a double, plating Hudson and Prado and putting the Braves ahead for good.
Altogether there were just 9 hits combined throughout the game. Fortunately for the Braves, 3 of their 5 came in the 6th inning.
Up next is a 3 game set vs. the Kansas City Royals. The series starts tomorrow at 7:35pm EST with Brian Bannister (6-4, 5.40 ERA) opposing Derek Lowe (8-5, 4.81 ERA).

i know he wasnt bad his whole stint with us
but if you ever even watched a single braves game last year, youd know why we got rid of KJ. Also, last time i checked, his almost 2:1 K:BB ratio throughout his stint with us also kind of sucks
if he starts hitting .220
then yeah, we probably should, but thats not the only reason KJ is gone, the main reason? MARTEEEEEEEN!!!!!!
Could have stuck KJ back in LF, so not really
the answer could only be they didn’t think he’d be worth what he’d get in arb.

oh yeah?
stick a guy whos had tommy john surgery in the outfield? why do you think he moved to 2B after his surgery? and yes, you’re right, having a 2B with no power but also a 2:1 K:BB ratio is not worth pretty much anything. And besides, all this doesn’t even matter anymore cause we have the best 2B in baseball right now
I should have followed Rhyno's advice and not responded...
basically your description of Kelly Johnson as a player is flat wrong. After all, what would we want with a guy who’s hit 13 HR, 21 2B and has an ops near .900 in our OF. And yes, I think he could play OF. He’d certainly be better defensively than last year’s LF, and his arm couldn’t be any worse than Johnny Damon or Nate McLouth, among others.

When nobody can hit the ball squarely you don’t really need Ks. However Hudson is prone to more bouts of bad luck than strikeout pitchers just by how many times the ball is put in play.

not really
So Lowe is a better pitcher than Hanson because his ground ball rate is alot higher? GB rate tells you more about what kind of pitcher a guy is than whether or not they are having success.
nice try
K rate and GB rate correlate to pitching success

Reason 1,678 to hate the NBA: since 1980 only 8 different teams have won the NBA championship. Only 8!
Furthermore, out of 60 championships, the Lakers and Celtics have won 32…actually, make that 33. Only the Lakers, Spurs, Pistons, Bulls, Celtics, Rockets, Heat, and 76ers have won NBA Championships in 30 years!!! The lack of parity blows my mind!
In the same time span there have been 13 NHL Champions, 15 NFL Champions, and 19 MLB Champions. My conclusion…every sport is better than NBA Basketball.
People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.
I can’t watch this series. It’s been painful offensively. Personally it’s probably more because of the fact that I am a Suns fan though.

Are they going to get Steve Nash some help in the offseason?
Are they going to resign Stoudemire?
GM Steve Kerr quit two days ago because owner Robert Sarver didn’t want to raise the salaries of the coaching staff, medical staff, video reviewers and Kerr himself.
Sarver sold the pick to Boston that ended up being Rajon Rondo, so I think Steve Nash will never win a title with the Suns. He always has tough breaks.
by Alvaro Andres Pizza Varela on Jun 18, 2010 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions
Well the Suns have the best Med staff in the league. Grant Hill has been totally rejuvenated. Kerr quit but as far as I know, nobody really knows the exact reason why yet. Sarver has paid the luxury tax the last 3 years though.
The draft picks have been bad, but that was mostly D’Antoni’s fault because he didn’t like to develop rookies. Lopez and Dragic made huge advancements this year and I believe Clark will next year. But Amare coming back is key at a cost just below max so they can get another key player.

I would say it was a great series
It wasn’t really a great game. Tons of missed free throws, lots of sloppy play-poor work securing loose balls, and the Celtics fouling like crazy in the fourth quarter unnecessarily to let the Lakers back in it. Was hoping for a bit higher standard of basketball in a game 7, but at least it was a close game.
I really don’t judge until last the seven minutes or so. Yea it was sloppy play and lots of fouls by the Celtics, but when the game is close and the teams are going back in forth. I think that’s great because that means that someone has to make big shots in pressure situations. Yea it was a great series but some games could have been better
Baves have gone 5-2 over their past 7
And have lost 2 games in the standings.
Sure, the Mets have had some easy teams, but remember that we weren’t playing top-notch competition when we got our season turned around. Remember, it started with a sweep of the Brewers, then beating up on the Pirates on Diamondbacks (with a two game sweep of the Reds thrown in). Sometimes, when you get on a roll, everyone’s bats just settle in.
I’m hoping that they lose their mojo before Beltran gets back and going strong.
The Mets aren't that good. Also haven't we been over this nonsense before?
OK, KK hasn’t been great, but he hasn’t been terrible either. The one person on a baseball team that needs to be backed up is the pitcher. KK has pitched some good games, he ought to be 4 and 5 but shit happens as old Forrest would say. Lee? Really like we can afford that? As for the Mets, they are playing over their heads and have been playing weak not strong teams. Don’t worry, even if they are good their front office will screw them up LOL!! I’m not worried about the Mets except for Francouer, WHY Frenchy you ask? Because the big goof is liable to hit a fraeking homer on a ball in the dirt the big assbite!!! LLMAO
Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher
Carl Crawford
I would really give anything to sign the guy. Too bad he’ll be a fucking Yankie.
If Chipper retires we would actually have a good opportunity to. I think Werth will command more money.

It's got little to do with hatred for Florida...
and more the overall douchiness of being a student in Athens but claiming UF. You shouldn’t see Auburn kids loving Bama, or Clemson kids who love South Carolina.
It’s a sign of self loathing, but he’s still my brother.
