Chipper Jones Meets With Press, Leaning Towards Retirement at End of Season

Photo

It's been a pretty slow day for Braves news, but that just changed.

According to reports, the Braves and Chipper Jones will have a press conference sometime between now and this weekend. David O'Brien said nearly every member of the Braves' front office were gathering near the dugout.

My take: This is the beginning of then end for our beloved Larry Wayne "Chipper" Jones. Why would Chipper call a press conference to say he's returning? If he was returning in 2011, why not just tell reporters now?

With the departure of Bobby at the end of the season and the possible, if not probable departure of Chipper as well, there's only one thing left to do: Win the whole dang thing.

UPDATE: Chipper will address the media at 6pm in Atlanta. Stay tuned.

UPDATE #2: According to those at the press conference, Chipper announced that he's leaning towards retiring at the end of the season, but won't discuss it publicly until after the season. He'll talk with his family and friends and give us an answer once the offseason comes around. He doesn't want to take anything away from Bobby during his final season and says it's not fair to his teammates. The team needs to focus on winning games and the pennant.

UPDATE #3: HERE is an audio link from this afternoon. H/T to inertia53 for posting the link.

I'll be at the game tonight

I’m hoping he will not be announcing today. I don’t want to get emotional at Turner Field. It’ll be bad enough at Bobby’s last game.

Its a shame

because I still think Chipper can do it at the plate, and if there was a DH position in the NL he’d be a perfect fit for it right now.

He just can’t stay healthy for even a week now.

And it sucks even more

because Chipper Jones IS Atlanta Braves baseball. My dad got me his autograph at my first Braves game in ‘96. He was my first Braves jersey. And he’ll always be my favorite Braves player for how loyal he was.

I don’t think he’ll announce it mid-season. Chipper wouldn’t want to distract the team. (and take away from Bobby’s farewell tour, too) I really hope this isn’t the end….

the Braves will win game 7 of the World Series at Turner Field on performances from Tommy Hanson and Jason Heyward, officially signaling the new era of Braves baseball. Bobby and Chipper will be hoisted up and they’ll carry them around Turner Field for one last goodbye.

Seriously. Georgia actually has some of the least severe natural/weather related problems (ie., floods, lightning, earthquakes, tornados, mudslides, etc.). I’ve always lived in Georgia and wouldn’t have believed it, but years ago I remember seeing a story in National Geographic where they charted the entire U.S. and Georgia was one of the better ones. Besides, I just cut my lawn and it’s as dry as British wit.

Just a little pocket, should dump a lot of water on the field and then be gone in 30 minutes. The delay will probably just be length it takes them to remove the tarp and then get the infield dirt smoothed out.

Chipper could have........

sold out to an AL team and become a DH, but he satyed true to his roots and stuck with the Braves through some pretty tough years. Speaking of the DH, has anyone ever noticed that AL fans only bitch about the pitcher having to hit, when they lose. I was reading a certain SB nation blog for an AL east team from Florida, where one of the writers was going on and on and on about how muh better the AL was and how much he hated NL style basbeall. Dude, the great thing about TV is if you dont enjoy what you’re watching, then press the big power button at the top of the remote. Hitting is part of the game, if you dont like it then get over it, you only have to watch NL games a few times a year. Besides, the Rays are an elite team, and they will beat most NL teams they face, lets just hope the Braves finish them off tonight

When and why would he have "sold himself out" like that?

Just two years ago, he was one of the better defensive 3Bs in the bigs, and I’m struck that his glovework is one of the things he’s always prided himself on.

I said “he could have”, not that he would have. And what I meant by that is that in this era of free agency combined with as many good seasons as he has had, I imagine teams ike the Yankees and Red Sox have offered him some pretty big contracts. I agree that his defensive skills were pretty good 2 years ago and have genrally been overlooked by many, but there are plenty of players his age who would sign with an AL team to extend their careers by a few seasons. So maybe I shouldn thave refered to it as “selling out” since I wouldnt consider guys like Griffey and Jim Thome sell outs, but I think its cool that he has sacrificed a lot to remain a Brave.
