Braves Sign J.R. House
J.R. House is a minor league slugger who has had many a-cups of coffee in the majors, but never with much success. We seem to be collecting these four-A sluggers this year -- House, Clevlen, M. Jones. If nothing else, Gwinnett will be a fun place to watch these guys hit homeruns day after day.

Hmmmm.
Sounds like we need someone to stand in the bullpen to stand in the right-handed batter’s box for throwing sessions?
He was 10 big league hits and 3 are HRs; He’s obviously got power, but this is the Braves effort to have somebody besides Cody Johnson lead the organization in HRs
Or maybe they’re trying to surround Cody with guys who have power but little else. Almost as if to say to him “this is what happens when you don’t develop a better skill set; you become a modern day Crash Davis”.

I hope he does look at Dunn. Dunn has an incredible sense of the strike zone and is one of the best OBP guys in baseball.

You can’t judge the guy off of 60 Major League at bats spread over 5 seasons where he’s got 6 extra base hits good for a .367 slugging percentage. It’s better to judge him based off of his 4 season’s worth of at bats in AAA, where he’s averaged 14 homers and 29 doubles a year good for a .458 slugging percentage. Yeah, he’s got power, but it’s not really home run power. He’s not every likely to challenge Cody for the organizational home run lead, especially considering he’s never had a season where he’s hit as many as Cody has each of the last 2 years, not even when he was in A ball.

He only had 9 HRs in over 500 at bats...
last year for Omaha. I wouldn’t expect too many bombs.
But we now have a QB to sling it around with Wagner.
Why do we keep refering to Mitch Jones as a AAAA guy? I thought cbwilk did a good job of breaking down his career path so far, and it has been nothing like what we are making him out to be. He has never been given a chance at the big-league level.
The tag of AAAA should be assigned to those players like JoJo Reyes who have been given plenty of opportunity, but never put it all together at the big league level, but continue to play well at the AAA level. Mitch Jones does not fit into that category.
This may sound like crazy talk, depending on the results of ST, I would not be extremely surprised to see MJ holding down the fort for JH until June or so…

good point
between M Jones, House, Hinske, Cabrera, the Damon talk, etc Wren is sure trying to have a backup plan available if Heyward starts in AAA. I think it’s mostly insurance and Heyward will start in Atlanta, but with his nagging injury history, a few warm bodies isn’t a bad idea.
Sweet! JR is the man. I got to see him a lot early in his career when he was in A ball for the Pirates and at that time I thought he was one of the better hitters in the minors. Unfortunately he hurt his elbow and (by some reasoning I still can’t fathom) quit baseball and went to West Virginia to play football. The way he got back into baseball is kind of funny; he and a friend jumped a fence and snuck into the Astros spring training complex. They hung out for a while and even got Craig Biggio’s autograph before they were kicked out. JR decided he wanted to come back and hooked on with, wait for it, the Astros.
He spent all of 2007 playing here in Norfolk so I got to see him for pretty much every home game (and a few on the road). He’s a top notch hitter with a great idea of the strike zone, though his power is mostly all in doubles. He really doesn’t get enough lift to hit many homers, but he’s aware of it and doesn’t try to play outside his game. He was originally a catcher but has never been very good at that position, especially after the arm injury made it so he could barely throw to second base. However, at first he is a very capable defender with soft hand. Above all, JR is a Braves kind of player, he’s a smart, conscientious person who excels more off the field than on it. He’s the perfect kind of guy to have on a AAA team to mentor the young players.
I don’t know what he’ll give to the team, I’d guess something along the lines of his typical AAA line, .293 avg, .809 OPS, 13 or 14 homers, 30 doubles, 60 RBI, but I’m personally very excited about this signing.

He plays both. Really he’s best as a DH and they use that a lot in the IL. Freeman is probably going to be at AA, so he wouldn’t factor into things for a while. My guess is that he catches when Sammy needs a day off (I’m sure they’ll have another catcher too, probably JC Boscan) and he plays some 1B while Barbaro DHs and vice versa. He’s probably not taking at bats or competing for time with anyone so much as just adding another piece to the AAA team.

Yeah, Freddie does probably start in Miss...
and I assumed Boscan would be lower, to help younger Ps develop with a strong backstop to work with.
It’s always hard to say where JC will end up. He started with Gwinnett last year then headed to Miss for most of the year. Basically it’s not surprising if he ends up anywhere from Gwinnett to Myrtle Beach. The guy is good at what he does.

which is why I felt he started lower...
we’ve now got House, or can sign any other random FA to split time with Sammons in AAA. AAA guys don’t really need much development anyway, so it just makes too much sense to have Boscan working with developing arms in Mississippi (Ortegano, Minor, Rohrbough, etc) or Myrtle (Delgado, Spruill, etc) than splitting time with Sammons. Plus, he could mentor a younger C like Sucre, Whitmer, or Kennelly, whereas Sammons doesn’t really need the help as much.
Just saw 3:10 to Yuma and your boy Ben Foster was really good in it. That is all.

I really like this signing..
and I really need to come up with a new moniker.. JMHO FW is going to look like a freaking genious this year with his off-season moves..especially in the whole aspect of things and the bigger picture.
Naturally, the Royals released him...
He has a minor league OBP in the .360 range. They couldn’t have him making the rest of the major league club look bad.

i love it
maybe he succeeds, maybe not, but he isnt too old, and he has the story behind him to become a legend… ok maybe i watched the natural last night just before reading about this signing

Former Pirate ~ Now a Brave ?
Didn’t or better yet wasn’t this guy considered by the Pirates organization to be a great young catcher and to be their catcher for many years to come ?
Interesting we picked him up but now what position is he ? Not really going to be a super big factor for this upcoming season for us anyway just find it interesting how a guy can fall from grace so quickly from an organization. Eitherway he cannot be as bad as W. Betemit, lol.

What was quick about his falling out of favor? The last time he was considered a top prospect was 2002, that’s 8 years ago.

Nice signing,he’ll be great for Gwinnett and more insurance for Glaus I suppose. In the article it said he could play some 3rd and LF. If so, does anyone think he’ll have a chance to make the club as a utility guy?
He’s never played much 3B or LF. His arm isn’t great and despite the fact that he was a track star in HS he’s not that fast. I’m not even sure he got a Major League invite, but even if he did if he makes the team it’s because of his bat and ability to catch, not because he could go to LF or 3B in an near emergency.
